<p>Bald Eagle Creek is a 55.2 mi tributary of the West Branch Susquehanna River mostly in Centre County, Pennsylvania, in the United States.</p><br>
<p>Bald Eagle Creek runs through the Bald Eagle Valley at the foot of the Bald Eagle Mountain ridge to Lock Haven.</p><br>
<p>The shorter Bald Eagle Creek (Little Juniata River) runs south in the valley from the same headlands near the Blair County/Centre County line, terminating in the Little Juniata River in Tyrone.</p><br>
<p>The main line of the Nittany and Bald Eagle Railroad short line runs along the full length of both Bald Eagle creeks. Interstate 80 crosses the creek between Snow Shoe and Bellefonte, and USA Route 322 crosses between Port Matilda and State College. Much of the Nittany Valley drains to the creek through water gaps in the Bald Eagle Mountain ridge.</p><br>
<p>Located along the creek in Unionville is the Fisher Farm Site, a significant archaeological site.</p><br>

<p>The Lion Salt Works is the last remaining open pan saltworks in Marston, near Northwich, Cheshire, England. It closed as a works in 1986 and is now preserved as a museum.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>John Thompson Junior and his son Henry Ingram Thompson, a member of a family that had been making salt during the 19th century, started the Lion Salt Works when he built a salt pan in the coal yard of the Red Lion Hotel, Marston, in 1894.</p><br>
<h3>Thompson family</h3><br>
<p>Six generations of the Thompson family were involved with the salt industry, at the site of the Lion Salt Works. John Thompson Senior (1799–1867) was originally a joiner, timber merchant and brickyard owner with premises on Witton Street and London Road in Northwich He entered the salt trade in 1842 when he started a shipping and lighting business along the River Weaver to the ports in Liverpool and Birkenhead. Initially this was in partnership with other salt proprietors but by 1846 he had entered a partnership with his son John Thompson Junior (1824–1899), called Thompson and Son that operated until 1889. They also occupied a timber yard and dockyard buildings in Northwich Castle on the River Weaver. The dockyards were sold to cover debts to W J Yardwood&#39;s in 1887.</p><br>
<p>They began to sink salt mines and start salt works north-west of Northwich. Platt’s Hill Mine, Wincham, was sunk by John Thompson in 1843, and in 1846 was followed by the Dunkirk Works, in Witton-cum-Twambrooks. Several more salt works and mines followed over the next forty years in the districts of Witton, Marston and Wincham north-west of Northwich, and also in Winsford. After the death of John Thompson Senior in 1867, the business was split between John Thompson Junior and his brother Jabez Thompson. After initially running the Alliance Works in Marston (see below), Jabez Thompson went on to run the successful family terracotta and brickworks on London Road, Northwich. John Thompson Junior continued to run the salt business with his sons Henry Ingram (1851–1937) and Alfred Jabez (1857–1965). In 1888 the majority of the remainder of the business was sold to the Salt Union.</p><br>
<p>After the sale of the family business in 1888 John Thompson Junior retired to Eddisbury Hall in Macclesfield. His sons were soon involved with the salt business once more. Henry Ingram Thompson started the Lion Salt Works, Marston (see below) whilst Alfred Jabez Thompson became a rival and ran a salt works in Wincham. Both of Henry Ingrams sons, Jack (1875–1966) and Alan Kinsey (1883–1964) joined him to work at the Lion Salt Works and the shipping office in Liverpool. After his death in 1937 his sons ran the business as a partnership. Alan Kinseys son, Henry Lloyd Thompson (1925–2013) joined the business in 1947 and Jack Thompson&#39;s, grandson Jonathan joined the business in 1962. They ran the Lion Salt Works until its closure in 1986.</p><br>
<h3>Alliance Salt Works</h3><br>
<p>The Lion Salt Works was not the first salt works on site. In 1857 John Thompson Senior and John Thompson Junior obtained from John Buckley a 50-year lease for the Outlet Field in Marston where they constructed the Alliance Salt Works. They subsequently bought the site in 1868. In the 1870s the site was run by Jabez Thompson, brother of John Thompson Junior. By the 1880s it was run by Alfred Jabez Thompson, the son of John Thompson Junior. He sold the site to the Salt Union in 1888 for £17,000.</p><br>
<h3>Lion Salt Works</h3><br>
<p>The Lion Salt Works was built in 1894 when John Thompson Junior and Henry Ingram Thompson purchased the site of the Red Lion Hotel, ajdacent to the bridge on the Ollershaw Lane in Marston. John Thompson Junior retired shortly afterwards to Eddisbury Hall in Macclesfield. Henry Ingram Thompson sunk a brine shaft, built a brine tank and engine house and built the first pan and stove house (number 1) on site around the Red Lion Hotel. By 1899 the Red Lion Hotel had been demolished and two cottages converted to the Red Lion Inn. This allowed them to build two further pan and stove houses (2 and 3). On site there were also two butter pans and two fishery pans. A Manager&#39;s House and Smithy were built at the south-west of the site. By 1906 a mineral railway had been built that extended to the south of the site. Henry Ingram Thompson ran the site with his sons Jack Thompson and Alan Kinsey Thompson. The salt works exported salt to Canada, North America and West Africa. The domestic market saw salt sold to Cheshire, Manchester and Liverpool.</p><br>
<p>Between the first and the second world wars the salt works saw little change. New markets were opened up with salt sold to Denmark for salting bacon. However, the advent of the Second World War meant these markets were disrupted. In 1937 Henry Ingram Thompson died. His sons Jack Thompson and Alan Kinsey Thompson ran the business. They dug a new brine bore hole and pump.</p><br>
<p>Henry Lloyd Thompson joined the firm in 1947 after the Second World War. He had just finished his military service in the Royal Navy. He was to run the salt works for the next forty years. After demolishing the butter and fishery pans, he built two more pan and stove house (numbers 4 and 5) in 1954 and 1965. In the 1950s, 90% of the salt produced was exported to West Africa. It was exported via firms including Paterson Zochonis, John Holt and ICI to ports on the West African coast including Calabar, Lagos and Port Harcourt in Nigeria, Monrovia in Liberia, Conakry in Guinea, and Freetown, Sierra Leone. The West African market continued to be successful despite open-pan salt being more expensive because it produced a light, flaky grained salt known as Lagos Salt. This was preferred in the West African market because it withstood the high temperatures and very high humidity of the tropics.</p><br>
<p>Henry Lloyd Thompson was joined by his second cousin Jonathan in the early 1960s. They sought to diversify and modernise the salt works. New techniques were introduced including an automated pan and converting the works to run on reclaimed oil. The Thompson&#39;s produced their own brand salt from the late 1960s in an attempt to create new markets. They eventually opened the Lion Salt Works as a working museum between 1980 and 1986.</p><br>
<p>During the 20th century more efficient methods of extracting and refining salt were developed and by the late 1960s the works was the only business continuing to use the open pan process in the country. The business closed down in 1986 when the West African markets, the major purchaser of Lagos Salt, began to decline. This was as a result of the Biafran War in Nigeria (1967–1970), and a series of military juntas that followed. In addition competition from cheaper imports of solar evaporated salt from Brazil in exchange for oil also affected the market. Henry Lloyd and Jonathan Thompson eventually closed the Lion Salt Works in 1986.</p><br>
<h2>Preservation</h2><br>
<p>The buildings were purchased by Vale Royal District Council to prevent their demolition. In 1993, the Lion Salt Works Trust was formed as a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee. In 2000, a survey showed that the land around the works was stable and during the following years money was raised from DEFRA, English Heritage, Cheshire Rural Recovery and the Northwest Development Agency to enable surveys to be completed and a conservation plan to be written. In July 2005, an application was made to the Heritage Lottery Fund and a Stage 1 award was made the following March. In March 2008, it was announced that the Heritage Lottery Fund had made an award of £4.96 million towards the £7 million total cost of the restoration project.</p><br>
<p>In 2004, Lion Salt Works was a candidate on the BBC&#39;s Restoration programme. The surviving buildings are recorded in the National Heritage List for England as designated Grade II listed buildings. The specific buildings listed are the canal salt shed, the engine shed and pump house, the office in the works yard, and the pan sheds and stoves and the store shed behind the works. The buildings are registered as a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The site is recognised as an Anchor Point of the European Route of Industrial Heritage.</p><br>
<p>In 2009, the site came into the ownership of Cheshire West and Chester Council. The site was reopened on 5 June 2015 after a major redevelopment project as a new heritage visitor attraction. The £10.2 million project was sponsored by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Cheshire West and Chester, Manage +, Historic England, WREN and Wates Foundation. The restoration won the AABC Conservation award at the 2016 Civic Trust Awards, and in August 2016 it was named the best UK Heritage Project by the National Lottery.</p><br>
<h2>Museum</h2><br>
<p>The Lion Salt Works has been restored as a museum and visitor attraction. The museum and its restored buildings have galleries that illustrate how the salt works operated and salt&#39;s effect on the economy and landscape of mid-Cheshire. The restored salt-work buildings and structures include a rebuilt stove house with its associated salt pan in situ, the smithy, engine house, a brine tank and the rail tracks used for transporting salt on the site. There is a café, conference facility and play area.</p><br>
<p>The Upton Sinclair House, located at 464 N. Myrtle Avenue, Monrovia, California, was the home of American novelist Upton Sinclair between 1942 and 1966. It is a 1923 Neo-Mediterranean building in a district of similar houses, located in suburban Los Angeles, in the San Gabriel Valley. Most of his later works were written while he lived here. He had converted the rear garage into his study.</p><br>
<p>The house was designed by California architect Frederick H. Wallis and is privately owned. It is made of poured concrete and includes "ball-and-ribbon" concrete moldings and Batchelder tile.</p><br>
<p>It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and, further, declared a National Historic Landmark in 1971. The house sustained damage during the 1991 Sierra Madre earthquake (5.6M) and was nearly torn down by its owner; however, California&#39;s state historic preservation office denied the demolition.</p><br>
<p>The Merchants&#39; National Bank  building is a historic commercial building located at 833 Fourth Avenue in Grinnell, Iowa. It is one of a series of small banks designed by Louis Sullivan in the Midwest between 1909 and 1919. All of the banks are built of brick and for this structure he employed various shades of brick, ranging in color from blue-black to golden brown, giving it an overall reddish brown appearance. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1976 for its architecture. In 1991 it was listed as a contributing property in the Grinnell Historic Commercial District.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>Merchants&#39; National Bank was built in 1914 and had its grand opening on January the first, in 1915, along with the Purdue State Bank in Indiana, also designed by Sullivan.</p><br>
<p>Structurally the building is a rectangular box, with a magnificent main facade and a windowed side facade.</p><br>
<p>Although this building is smaller than either his Owatonna or Cedar Rapids banks it appears just as monumental. This is due largely to the oversized cartouche that surrounds a circular window on the Fourth Street facade. Light is introduced into the interior by a series of stained glass windows that alternate with structural posts down the side of the building and through the colored glass skylight that comprises much of the ceiling.</p><br>
<p>While the bank housed in the structure, and its location, Grinnell Iowa, did not warrant national attention, yet the unveiling of a Louis Sullivan building was given national coverage in the architectural press of the day and the Merchants Bank was thus featured in an eleven-page spread in The Western Architects February 1916 edition.</p><br>
<p>As he did in his banks in Cedar Rapids and Sidney, Ohio, Sullivan used lions, or at least a grotesque, winged version of a lion, as figurative decoration. This creature is one of the very few figurative elements that can be found in the architect&#39;s designs. (The angels in his Transportation Building and the Bayard-Condict Building being other examples.)</p><br>
<p>Some of the plans and even the designs of the ornament were done by Sullivan&#39;s draftsman Parker N. Berry, who was shortly thereafter to fall victim to the 1918 Spanish flu epidemic.</p><br>
<p>In the 1970s or early 1980s a city beautification project sponsored the planting of several trees in front of the bank. Gebhard calls this an "unbelievable decision" for the growing plants would obscure more and more of the amazing facade. These plantings can be easily seen in the gallery pictures, taken in 1985. These trees were removed as of 2013.</p><br>
<p>In 2007 the city remodeled its downtown sidewalks and streets so the intersections of the square had the "Jewelbox" appearance to them. The city also put Planters at the four corners of the crossings which have the "Jewelbox" engraved in them.</p><br>
<p>Between 2008 and 2009 one of the lions in front of the building was damaged. Both lions have now been replaced.</p><br>

<p>The Henry F. Miller house is an international style house at 30 Derby Avenue in Orange, Connecticut on the United States National Register of Historic Places. The house was designed and built in 1948-1949 by Henry F. Miller as a thesis project for a Master of Architecture at the Yale School of Architecture. The house was one of the areas first modern houses and was featured in the New Haven Register as "The House of Tomorrow". It was open to visitors for a few weeks after completion to raise funds for the New Haven Boy&#39;s Club. It was viewed with "wild anticipation," and about 25,000 people paid a small admission to see it. The house was also covered in House Beautiful as part of a series on "The New American Style."</p><br>
<p>This house embodies many characteristics of the International Style, as adapted to the single-family suburban house, including an open plan with movable walls, flat roof, inclusion of modern conveniences, careful attention to environmental and functional considerations, avoidance of ornament, and extensive use of glass. The house was designed to take full advantage of its unique site on the side of a hill. Connecticut has an unusually large concentration of international style houses, including the most famous, Johnson&#39;s Glass House. Originally developed in Europe as a new system of building that took advantage of modern technological advances and embraced an unornamented, machine-made esthetic transcending regional or national characteristics, the International Style absorbed some natural materials and regional features in the years just before and after World War II.</p><br>

<h2>Background</h2><br>
<p>Miller was an architecture student at Yale and chose to design a modern house for his thesis project. Upon completion, Miller and his wife lived in the house. As their family grew the Millers added a new master bedroom, study, and playroom in 1959, but the addition carefully followed the lines and style of the original.</p><br>
<p>In the New Haven area, George Kreye, a professor of German at Yale, had designed an international style house in 1935. Of the postwar houses, the Miller house was one of the first, but others soon joined it. Also in</p><br>
<p>Orange was the Clark house, designed by Marcel Breuer and completed in 1951, utilizing the rough</p><br>
<p>fieldstone and binuclear plan that were typical of Breuer&#39;s work at that time. In other New Haven</p><br>
<p>suburbs, modern houses were built by young architects like Peter Hale, Carlton Granberry, King-lui Wu and</p><br>
<p>Robert Coolidge or by established architects like Douglas Orr who adopted Modernism. Vincent Scully designed his own house in Woodbridge.</p><br>
<p>The Miller house helped the spread of Modern architecture in Connecticut and the United States. Yale was one of the leading architecture schools in promoting the Modern movement, and its faculty and students made the New Haven area a center of post-war Modernism in Connecticut and the United States.</p><br>
<p>In the House Beautiful article on the Miller house as part of that magazine&#39;s ongoing coverage of what it called "the New American Style", the article stressed economy and technology in addition to aesthetics. Its opening also suggests the difficulty of convincing average Americans to consider Modern architecture:</p><br>
<p>The American Dream: &mdash; as much luxury as possible &mdash; for as little money as possible. Like all</p><br>
<p>dreams, this one won&#39;t come true by just wishing. You have to do what this Connecticut</p><br>
<p>family did &mdash; work at it. They parked their prejudices, studied all the advanced techniques in home</p><br>
<p>building, and applied them. Result: 2,152 ft&sup2;. of luxury for $25,000.</p><br>
<p>In 1985, the Miller house was included in an exhibition at the Yale School of Architecture called</p><br>
<p>"Ten Years Out." The exhibition showed buildings designed by alumni of the school in their first ten years</p><br>
<p>after graduation. The Miller house was the earliest work in the show.</p><br>
<h2>International style characteristics</h2><br>
<p>The house embodies many distinctive characteristics of postwar International Style</p><br>
<p>architecture:</p><br>
<p>post and beam frame: creates flexible interior and frees structure from cladding. Makes possible large expanses of glass, since the walls do not support the structure.</p><br>
<p>extensive use of glass: in large fixed sheets, operable windows, and glazed doors—to make the interior light and airy and to provide visual connection to outdoors.</p><br>
<p>simple, geometric shapes: including a flat roof.</p><br>
<p>untraditional plan: main living spaces on lower level to take advantage of hillside location and allow easy access to terraces. Bathroom divided into three compartments &mdash; for tub, toilet, and sink &mdash; to allow simultaneous use by more than one person. Planning for privacy: few, small windows toward street; orientation to rear of lot (different from conventional plans, which faced living room toward street).</p><br>
<p>integration of structure and site: house is sited on small buildable portion of a lot, on brink of hill leading down to wetlands. Living spaces open to terrace and deck for outdoor living; on upper level, balcony provides further outdoor spaces. Large windows provide sense of connection between interior and exterior as does design of planting bed at foot of stairs. Fences and dividers screen carport from guests&#39; entry and service yard from living spaces. Existing vegetation saved wherever possible and other landscaping executed in naturalistic style to blend with surroundings.</p><br>
<p>planning to take advantage of climate: windows face south, with shading computed to allow sunlight into the house in winter, but not in summer. Solid or nearly solid walls facing north, to provide protection from winter winds. Placement of windows and doors to allow cross ventilation. The roof has a parapet that allows it to be flooded in the summer, providing additional cooling.</p><br>
<p>extensive storage space: Examples include shallow shelves for cans in kitchen and movable storage walls containing drawers as well as hanging space, which double as room dividers.</p><br>
<p>innovative technology: built-in watering system for indoor planting bed. Intercom between kitchen and front door, with electric latch that allows front door to be opened without coming upstairs. Radiant heating in the floor, eliminating radiators in the lower level.</p><br>
<p>aesthetics: a sense of openness and space achieved by the use of large windows, open plan, simple forms and the open stairwell, with its large window, open treads, and light rail. Moldings and ornament are eliminated.</p><br>
<h2>Henry F. Miller</h2><br>
<p>Henry F. Miller was born in 1916 in South Dartmouth, Massachusetts and grew up in New York City. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University in 1938. At Yale, he was on the editorial staff of campus humor magazine The Yale Record. After serving in the Army in World War II, he returned to Yale, graduating with a Bachelor of Architecture in 1948. Miller taught at Yale for a year, and then joined the firm of Harold H. Davis in New Haven (later known as Davis Cochran Miller Baerman Noyes). The firm worked on a wide variety of projects, particularly educational, public and commercial facilities. In 1974 Miller left the firm to serve as Associate Director of Facilities Planning for Yale University. He retired in 1990.</p><br>
<p>Miller became a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 1972. Historic preservation became a special interest, and he served as Connecticut State Preservation Coordinator on the national AIA Historic Resources Committee. In addition, Miller was a member of the boards of the New Haven Colony Historical Society, the New Haven Preservation Trust and the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation, and served on the Connecticut State Historic Preservation Board.</p><br>
<p>Crystal Lake is near the village of Barton in Orleans County, Vermont. It is a glacial lake 3 by and 100 ft deep in places. Route 5 runs along the lake&#39;s western shore. Crystal Lake is in the northeast section of the state of Vermont. The lake is owned by the state and managed by the Department of Environmental Conservation.</p><br>
<p>Exotic species infestations are a concern, with an existing Eurasian water milfoil population, which is being addressed.</p><br>
<p>The lake is a coldwater fishery. Lake trout are native and the current population is wild. There are rainbow trout (wild and stocked), yellow perch, smallmouth bass, rockbass, pumpkinseed, chain pickerel, longnose suckers, white suckers, and various minnow species.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Rogers&#39; Rangers were forced to retreat through the area following their attack on Saint-Francis, Quebec in 1759. The fleeing rangers split up before getting to Barton. One group followed the Barton River south to the falls at the outlet of Crystal Lake where they were able to catch fish. From there, they continued south over the summit into the Passumpsic River Valley.</p><br>
<p>In the 19th century, the lake was sometimes called "Belle Pond."</p><br>
<p>Construction on a dam to enhance and control the lake was completed in 1860. It consists of concrete, stone, and masonry. The core is concrete. The foundation is rock, and soil. The height is 17 ft by 65 ft long. Maximum discharge is 1,700 cuft per second. The capacity is 6,740 acre.ft. Normal storage is 2,808 acre.ft. It drains an area of 22.5828 square miles.</p><br>
<p>Around 1900, a granite quarry was located on the east side of the lake. Steamboats barged stone across to the west side.</p><br>
<p>The lake has two parks at the north end. The State Park started by the CCC during the depression but not completed until the 1940s. It is at the northwestern edge. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places August 30, 2005.</p><br>
<p>Adjacent to the state park, at the northeastern end, is Pageant Park, the Barton, Vermont town park.</p><br>
<h2>Footnotes</h2><br>
<p>Lake Cochichewick is a lake in North Andover, Massachusetts that collects water from Weir Hill and other local uplands. Its overflow drains into the Cochichewick River, which joins the Merrimack.</p><br>
<p>Brooks School, a private co-educational prep school, is located on the shores of the lake.</p><br>
<h2>Public access restrictions</h2><br>
<p>For the past century, Lake Cochichewick has been North Andover&#39;s main supply of drinking water and public access to the lake was forbidden. In May 2002, however, the town began issuing boating permits:</p><br>
<p>Certain watercraft are allowed and must be designed to be manually propelled, by oars or paddles. Rowing shells, johnboats, dinghies, rowboats, canoes and kayaks are acceptable as long as the occupants are isolated from contact with the lake. Boats must not have any thru-holes (e.g. self-bailers) that would allow contact between the occupants and the lake water. Electric motors are acceptable as an alternate form of propulsion. The maximum length of a motorized craft is 15 feet. Inflatable boats, windsurfers and seaplanes are not allowed. No domestic animals are allowed to be in boats, on the ice, or in the water at any time.</p><br>
<p>Swimming is not allowed on Lake Cochichewick, neither for humans nor dogs. The town has posted signs along the trails near the lake informing hikers that it is used for drinking water, and that swimming is punishable with a $50 fine.</p><br>
<h2>Public health issues</h2><br>
<p>As the Merrimack Valley was once highly industrialized, there has been concern about the levels of contaminants such as mercury in Lake Cochichewick and other local waters. However, recent tests have shown a significant drop in mercury levels in fish such as yellow perch and largemouth bass. A spokesperson for the state Department of Environmental Protection said:</p><br>
<p>bviously the move to severely restrict mercury emissions from trash incinerators as well as closing down all state medical waste incinerators really has had a positive impact.... It takes a long time for mercury to build up in the environment, and our thought is that it will take quite a bit of time to leave the environment.... This is showing us that in a relatively short period of time we can have some dramatic reductions.</p><br>
<p>Lake Saltonstall, referred to locally as Plug Pond, is a small lake located in the southwest park of the Winnekenni Park Conservation Area, near Winnekenni Castle, in Haverhill, Massachusetts. Accessible via the main entrance on Sanders Road or through trails leading from Winnikenni Castle, the lake has an area open to the public, and another reserved exclusively for Haverhill residents. During the summer months residents may enjoy a swimming area, municipal boating programs, picnicking and bathroom facilities once they have shown proof of residency and paid a parking fee of $2.00 per vehicle. Those who walk enter for free. Residents and non-residents alike may enjoy the lake for fishing as it is a state-stocked fishing area open to the public.</p><br>
<p>The Home Building Association Bank  is a historic building located at 1 North Third Street in Newark, Ohio, and was designed by noted Chicago architect Louis Sullivan. It was one of three banks designed by Sullivan in 1914, the other two being in Grinnell, Iowa and in West Lafayette, Indiana. For this project the architect was given a narrow lot but made the building larger by making it two stories high, something that he did not typically do in his banks.</p><br>
<p>The color scheme chosen here deviates from his normal red-brown brick tapestry surface. Instead the building is covered with gray-green terra cotta slabs that are edged with typical Sullivanesque border designs. The ornamentation included a winged lion quite similar to the ones to be found in Cedar Rapids, Grinnell and Sidney. Little mention is made in the literature about Sullivan as to why these creatures populate his banks.</p><br>
<p>Also unusual is the fact that Sullivan includes his name in the tile mosaic over the front door.</p><br>
<p>It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 2, 1973.</p><br>
<p>The building was gifted to the Licking County Foundation in December 2013. The Licking County Foundation intends to restore the building, and when the renovation is complete, Explore Licking County, the area&#39;s convention and visitors bureau, will move into the space.</p><br>

<p>The Hurunui River is the fourth largest of the four principal rivers in north Canterbury, New Zealand, with a catchment area of 2,670 km&sup2;. The river flows from the eastern side of the Southern Alps, to the Pacific Ocean.</p><br>
<p>Some of the tributaries include the Jollie Brook, the Glenrae River and the Mandamus River. The north branch of the river flows through Lake Sumner. A hot pool has been constructed at the base of a small waterfall on a side stream of the river.</p><br>
<h2>Recreation</h2><br>
<p>The river has rapids rated class II and III on the International Scale of River Difficulty and is popular for kayaking. The best whitewater is considered to be below the confluence of the north and south branches of the river in Maori Gully and in the Harwarden Gorge.</p><br>
<p>Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) were introduced from California in the 1900s for game fishing.</p><br>
<h2>Water conservation order</h2><br>
<p>On 30 August 2007, the New Zealand Fish and Game Council and the New Zealand Recreational Canoeing Association (now known as Whitewater NZ) lodged an application with the Ministry for the Environment for a Water Conservation Order to protect the Hurunui River.</p><br>
<p>On 14 August 2009, the Special Tribunal considering the application recommended to the Minister that a conservation order be granted for the North Branch of the Hurunui River but not the South Branch. On 2 September, Whitewater NZ lodged an appeal of the Tribunal&#39;s decision with the Environment Court in order to include the South Branch of the Hurunui River.</p><br>
<h2>Water project</h2><br>
<p>The Hurunui Water Project has applied to Environment Canterbury, the regional council responsible for administering the river, for resource consents to dam the river and to take water for irrigation. The proposed scheme involves a weir that will raise the level of Lake Sumner, a dam and lake on the south branch of the river and an intake on the main stem of the river.</p><br>
<p>In October 2009, the Hurunui Water Project said it would delay the processing of its applications for resource consents for up to a year so that the Canterbury Water Management Strategy could address the issue of water storage. A march planned in Christchurch as a protest to the scheme still went ahead as scheduled two days after the announcement. As well as hundreds of protest marchers, kayakers and fishers travelled down the Avon River. Sam Mahon, a Canterbury-based artist concerned about water pollution, made a bust of Environment Minister Nick Smith out of dairy-cow dung in order to publicise the campaign to stop the Hurunui River from being dammed for irrigation.</p><br>
<p>In February 2010 the Hurunui Water Project announced that it would reactivate the resource consent process. On 16 November 2010, the Hurunui Water Project lodged a High Court appeal of Environment Canterbury&#39;s decision to make the damming of the Hurunui River a non-complying activity in the Canterbury Natural Resources Regional Plan.</p><br>
<p>In September 2012 the public notification of resource consent recommenced. The scope includes the construction of four dams on the Waitohi river, extraction of up to 49.2 m3/s of water from the main stem of the Hurunui river, extraction of up to 42.4 m3/s from the Waitohi River, run-of-river hydro-power generation, and storage of 6.5 e6m3 of water in other dams on the plains. By comparison the existing flow of the Hurunui river is 53 m3/s (mean) and low-flow of 16.8 m3/s. <p>Pisco is a mountain in Peru, located in the Cordillera Blanca about 60 km north of Huaraz. It was first climbed on July 12, 1951 by C. Kogan, G. Kogan, R.Leininger and M. Lenoir.</p><br>
<p>Previously, this mountain was popular for its easy climb. However, the primary climbing route has melted significantly. As a result, this mountain is no longer the easy climb it once was and depending on the season Pisco has a large ice wall with a 50-60 metre climb up a 60 degree slope. It is now rated as PD on the French Alpine scale. It is predicted that this mountain will get more difficult as the glacier continues to recede.</p><br>
<p>There are a multitude of companies in Huaraz offering guided climbs of the mountain, which usually include all equipment, food, transport, guide, and possibly a porter. The normal route is from the road to the south, up to the col to the west, then to the summit. There are two or three camps on the mountain and one at its base, although climbers often only use one. The first is next to the road and river on the valley floor, known as Cebollapampa. The second is in or next to (9&deg;1&prime;46.6&Prime;S latitude, 77&deg;37&prime;46.4&Prime;W longitude at 4,765 m). The third, called the moraine camp (9&deg;1&prime;24&Prime;S latitude, 77&deg;38&prime;31&Prime;W longitude) lies just below the ice of the first glacier. It is also possible to set up a camp in the col right on the glacier, as there is a convenient flat part. Some parties travel from Huaraz and climb to the moraine camp in one day, then summit and return to Huaraz the next.</p><br>
<p>Climbing involves mostly walking on snow slopes up to 35 degrees, but there is one section of about 100m of steep ice. Views from the mountain are superb, encompassing many of the other well known mountains of the Cordillera Blanca, such as Huascarán, Chopicalqui, Artesonraju, and Alpamayo.</p><br>
<p>The altitude makes the climb very difficult for anyone not well acclimatised or fit, and even those who are will be slowed down. Sleeping at the two high camps is also difficult. Possible sleeping in the third camp on the ice requires proper equipment.</p><br>
<p>The Upper Palatine Forest  is a mountain range in Central Europe that is divided between Germany and the Czech Republic. It is part of the larger Bohemian Massif and the German Central Uplands.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>The German side belongs to the Upper Palatinate region of Bavaria, it stretches about 100 km from the Bavarian Forest in the south up to the Fichtel Mountains and the Steinwald range in the north. However, the highest peaks of the range lie along the eastern Czech side in the Plzeň Region of western Bohemia, northwest of the Bohemian Forest. The southern rim runs from the Cham and Furth Basin across the border to the Všeruby (Neumark) mountain pass, which is part of the Main European Watershed. The other end is marked by Waldsassen, the northernmost town of the Upper Palatinate.</p><br>
<p>The Mittelgebirge range is a mountainous solid mass, its highest point being at an altitude of 1,042 m. Prominent rocks include the Wolfenstein and the Parkstein hill. Once a mining area for iron and gold, the uplands feature many steep valleys, medieval castle ruins and numerous hiking trails. It is a popular destination for recreation.</p><br>

<p>Llyn-y-Foel  is a lake in Snowdonia, Wales. It is approximately 240 m across, 120 m wide and up to 2 m deep. It lies at 535m altitude at the foot of the main ridge of Moel Siabod at.</p><br>
<p>The main outflow, at the south-east of the lake, forms one of the main tributaries of Afon Ystumiau, which eventually feeds into Afon Lledr and subsequently into Afon Conwy.</p><br>
<p>The deep brown colour of the water, caused by the peat in the immediate area, gives rise to a unique type of brown trout which can only be found in this lake.</p><br>
<p>Although the lake bears the name Llyn y Foel, it does have another name - Llyn Llygad yr Ych, the Lake of the Ox&#39;s Eye - which recounts a tale about an ox that lost an eye under the strain of pulling the dreadful afanc from Betws y Coed to Glaslyn below Snowdon. <p>Navajo Lake is a reservoir located in San Juan County and Rio Arriba County in northwestern New Mexico, in the southwestern United States. Portions of the reservoir extend into Archuleta County in southern Colorado. The lake is part of the Colorado River Storage Project, which here manages the upper reaches of the San Juan River, storing and releasing water that is used locally for irrigation, or ultimately reaching the Colorado River in Utah. Water is impounded in Navajo Lake by the earth- and rock-filled Navajo Dam, 3,800 ft long and 400 ft high, completed in 1962. The 15,600 acre lake is over 25 mi long and lies at an elevation of up to 6,085 ft.</p><br>
<p>The construction of the dam and the resulting lake flooded and destroyed one of the Navajos&#39; most sacred sites.</p><br>
<p>Two shoreline areas near the dam in New Mexico are part of the Navajo Lake State Park, featuring over 200 camping and picnic sites, and two improved boat ramps and two marinas. The river shorelines below the dam are also part of the state park, as well as a BLM Recreation Area. An area in Colorado near the head of the lake is the Navajo State Recreation Area. The lake is an excellent destination for camping and general boating, as well Smallmouth Bass, Black Crappie, Northern Pike, Channel Catfish, and Trout fishing.</p><br>
<p>The Erwinna Covered Bridge is a wooden covered bridge that spans Swamp Creek in Erwinna, Pennsylvania, United States.</p><br>
<p>The bridge was constructed using a lattice-type design.</p><br>
<p>The National Register of Historic Places lists the date built as 1871, while county records say 1832. The Erwinna Covered Bridge is Bucks County&#39;s shortest covered bridge, at only 56 ft long and 15 ft wide.</p><br>
<p>The bridge&#39;s WGCB Number is 39-09-04.</p><br>
<p>During the winter the bridge has been decorated by the Church Of Tinicum on Geigel Hill Road, with lighted pineroping and wreaths at each side of the bridge.</p><br>
<p>In September 2012 a 13&#39; box truck took out the infrastructure of the bridge, causing PennDOT to estimate the bridge will be closed for 4–6 months. It was repaired just 3 months after the accident.</p><br>
<p>In the early morning hours of Sunday, May 12, 2013, vandals sprayed graffiti on all of the bridge&#39;s decorative doors and the concrete around the bridge. The same tags were found on a nearby bridge on Headquarters Road, which intersects with Geigel Hill Road in Erwinna.</p><br>
<p>On July 22, 2013, the bridge received structural damage after being struck by a delivery truck, and was closed indefinitely pending an inspection and repair estimate by PennDOT engineers.</p><br>
<p>Banner Peak is the second tallest peak in the Ritter Range of California&#39;s Sierra Nevada. The mountain is 12,942 ft tall, and there are several glaciers on its slopes. It lies within the boundaries of the Ansel Adams Wilderness; at the foot of the peak lie Garnet Lake, Lake Ediza, and the famous Thousand Island Lake. Banner Peak is near the town of Mammoth Lakes; from there, climbers can hike to the foot of the mountain where various routes reach the summit, the easiest of which is a from the west end of Thousand Island Lake and then the saddle between Banner Peak and the slightly taller Mount Ritter. Other nearby lakes include Lake Catherine and Shadow Lake.</p><br>
<p>The peak was named in 1883 by USGS topographer Willard D. Johnson who observed a banner cloud streaming from the summit.</p><br>
<p>The Ritter Range is a small mountain range within California&#39;s Sierra Nevada. Most of the mountain range lies within the Ansel Adams Wilderness. The Range is easily viewed from Minaret Summit, which is accessible by motor vehicle. The Ritter Range is most easily accessible from Mammoth Lakes, where hiking trails lead to lakes throughout the range. The John Muir Trail passes by many lakes within the Ritter Range. The most prominent peaks of the Ritter Range are Mount Ritter, at 13,143 feet, Banner Peak, at 12,936 feet, and the Minarets, a group of sharp peaks south of Mt. Ritter. Thousand Island Lake, Ediza Lake, Garnet Lake, Lake Catherine, Minaret Lake, Cecile Lake, and Shadow Lake all lie within the Ritter Range, and are accessible by trail.</p><br>
<p>The range is named for Carl Ritter, who had been a teacher of Josiah Whitney when he was a student in Berlin in the 1840s."</p><br>
<p>The Ritter Range, near the Minarets and Minaret Lake, was the site of the plane crash of Steve Fossett in 2007.</p><br>
<p>The Great Ruaha River is a river in south-central Tanzania that flows through the Usangu wetlands and the Ruaha National Park east into the Rufiji River. Its basin catchment area is 83,970 km&sup2;. The population of the basin is mainly sustained by irrigation and water-related livelihoods such as fishing and livestock keeping.</p><br>
<p>Great Ruaha is about 475 km (300 mi.) long, its tributary basin has a catchment area of 68,000 km² and the mean annual discharge is 140 m³/s. The Great Ruaha River supplies 22 per cent of the total flow of the Rufiji catchment system. Thirty-eight species of fish have been identified in the Great Ruaha River.</p><br>
<p>The rivers headwaters are in the Kipengere Range. From there the Great Ruaha River descends to the Usangu plains, an important region for irrigated agriculture and livestock in Tanzania. The river eventually reaches the Mtera Dam and then flows south to the Kidatu Dam. These two generate about 50 per cent of the Tanzanias electricity. The river continues southwards and flows across the Selous Game Reserve before reaching the Rufiji River. The major rivers contributing to the Great Ruaha River are Lukosi, Yovi, Kitete, Sanje, Little Ruaha, Kisigo, Mbarali, Kimani and Chimala whereas the small ones include Umrobo, Mkoji, Lunwa, Mlomboji, Ipatagwa, Mambi and Mswiswi rivers.</p><br>
<p>Decreased flows in the Great Ruaha have been recorded since the early 1990s, resulting in complete drying of sections of the river in 1993 and in dry years since (illustration above). This has been attributed to uncontrolled and poor water management, with the large rice irrigation schemes playing a major role.</p><br>
<p>The Star Engraving Company Building is a building at 3201 Allen Parkway in Houston, Texas, built in 1930 in the Spanish Colonial Revival style by the Star Engraving company to house its engraving factory. The building is currently owned by the city of Houston and serves as the Houston Center for the Arts, housing the Stages Repertory Theatre, the Houston Arts Alliance, and the Bayou Preservation Alliance.</p><br>

<p>It was designated a local historic landmark in 1986, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.</p><br>
<h2>Residents</h2><br>
<p>The Stages Repertory Theatre has resided in the building since 1985, and the Childrens Museum of Houston resided there until 1992. The building became the subject of controversy in 1992 when then-owner 3201 Allen Parkway Ltd. indicated its intent to evict the Stages Theatre and the Childrens Museum in order to develop the building into loft condominia in partnership with developer Gross Investments. The Childrens Museum had long been planning a move to the Museum District anyway, but Stages and its supporters protested that a move would greatly harm the theatre, and requested local-government assistance in buying the building. A few months later, the development deal with Gross Investments fell through, and 3201 Allen Parkway Ltd. offered to sell the building to Stages. However, Stages couldnt meet its asking price and negotiations broke down. The City of Houston eventually purchased the building, after a controversial threat to use eminent domain powers to confiscate it, and turned it into a municipal arts center.</p><br>
<p>Drakolimni  is the name of several alpine or sub-alpine lakes in northwestern Greece Epirus region: the ones in mountain Tymfi and Smolikas are the most widely known. According to local folktales the lakes used to be inhabited by dragons who fought each other by throwing pines and rocks and thus created the peculiar landscape and gave their names to the lakes.</p><br>
<h2>Drakolimni of Tymfi</h2><br>
<p>The first lake resides at an altitude of 2050m above sea level, on the mountain range of Tymfi, in Vikos–Aoös National Park. It is overlooked by the nearby peaks of Ploskos (Greek: Πλόσκος) and Astraka (Greek: Αστράκα). At 5 hours walking distance from the village of Papingo, the lake is a popular trekking destination in the Vikos–Aoös National Park. The lake is inhabited by a species of alpine newt, called drakakia by the locals (Greek: Δρακάκια) and, according to local sources, the newts&#39; resemblance to small dragons gives the lake its distinctive name .</p><br>
<h2>Drakolimni of Smolikas</h2><br>
<p>The second lake resides on the west slope of Smolikas, the second highest mountain of Greece. Smolikas lies a few kilometers north of Tymfi, only separated by the gorge of the river Aoos. This lake is also inhabited by alpine newt.</p><br>

<p>Saltfjellet is a mountain area in Nordland county, Norway that separates the two regions of Helgeland and Salten. It is also a cultural border between the Southern and Central parts of Sápmi.</p><br>
<h2>Geography and environment</h2><br>
<p>The Saltfjell is one of the largest mountain ranges in Norway, and is also where the Arctic Circle cuts through the country. This range is part of seven municipalities: The northern part is part of Saltdal, Bodø, Beiarn and Gildeskål, the western part is in Meløy and Rødøy while the southern part is in Rana.</p><br>
<p>The highest mountain is Ølfjellet at 1,751 m above sea level. The mountains stretch from the coast to the Swedish border. The glacier Svartisen is actually two glaciers, separated by the Glomdalen valley with the Glomåga river. Western Svartisen is the second largest glacier on the Norwegian mainland, and is part of the Saltfjellet-Svartisen National Park. There are many other glaciers as well. A total of 2,587 km&sup2; of the area is protected. Several long valleys radiate from the mountains, such as the Dunderland Valley and Blakkådalen going south from the mountains, and Saltdal and the Beiar Valley going northwards. The eastern part of the range forms a plateau with some gently sloping mountains, and this is where the road and railway crosses over Saltfjell. Both road and railway take advantage of the Dunderland Valley and the Saltdal valley to make the distance on the alpine tundra, which often sees snowstorms in winter, as short as possible. The western part is more alpine and steep, and this is where the engabreen glacier tongue of Western Svartisen almost reaches down to the fjord.</p><br>
<h2>Transport</h2><br>
<p>There are two main transport routes over the mountains: the European Route E6 highway and the Nordland Line. The E6 highway was opened in 1937 and was asphalted in 1972. Until 1968 the road was closed in the winter. The railway line was built over the mountain during World War II and opened in 1947.</p><br>
<h2>Name</h2><br>
<p>The mountain range is named after the Salten district, the last element is the finite form of fjell which means "mountain".</p><br>
<p>The Grand Ballon  or Great Belchen is the highest mountain of the Vosges, located 25 km northwest of Mulhouse, France. It is also the highest point of the Grand-Est French region.</p><br>
<h2>Name</h2><br>
<p>Grand Ballon means "great mountain" because a ballon in French is a geographical term for a mountain with a rounded summit.</p><br>
<p>Some still call it Ballon de Guebwiller, after the name of the closest town, Guebwiller, located to the east. It is 1,423.7 m high.</p><br>
<h2>Climate</h2><br>
<p>Along with the Hohneck the summit of the Grand Ballon is the coldest and windiest point in Alsace. A record low of was recorded on 10 February 1956, a record high of was recorded on 13 August 2003. The difference between the Grand Ballon and the neighboring plain (Mulhouse area) usually ranges from and is higher in summertime.</p><br>
<p>Winter snow cover is usually more than above of altitude. The highest snow accumulation ever recorded was 7 March 2006; in 1969 and 1970 the snow cover was above.</p><br>
<h2>Trails</h2><br>
<p>The well known Route des Crêtes (French for "route of the peaks") circumvents the mountain top around east, crossing a mountain pass at an altitude of, between Le Markstein winter sports station and Hartmannswillerkopf, a rocky spur.</p><br>
<h2>Tour de France</h2><br>
<p>The road over the pass to the north of the mountain is occasionally used in the Tour de France, the first crossing being in 1969. It is the only Hors categorie (beyond categorization) climb in northern France.</p><br>
<h2>Belchen System</h2><br>
<p>The mountain is part of the so-called Belchen System, a group of mountains with the name "Belchen" (in German) that may have been part of a Celtic sun calendar.</p><br>
<p>Barataria Bay, also Barrataria Bay, is a bay of the Gulf of Mexico, about 15 miles  long and 12 miles  wide, in southeastern Louisiana, in Jefferson Parish and Plaquemines Parish, United States. It is separated from the gulf by two barrier islands, Grand Isle and Grand Terre.</p><br>
<p>The bay takes its name from the Spanish novel Don Quixote, in which the insula Barataria, or Barataria island, appears as a fictional territory governed by Sancho Panza.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>The bay is indented and marshy, with many islands. The surrounding low-lying Barataria country, south of New Orleans and west of the Mississippi River Delta, is noted for its shrimp industry (based at villages built on pilings above the coastal marshes), muskrat trapping, natural gas wells, oil wells, and sulfur production. Its inlet is connected to the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway system.</p><br>
<h2>History and economy</h2><br>
<p>Barataria Bay was used in the early 19th century as the base of the pirates, privateers, and smugglers led by Jean Lafitte. They were referred to as the Baratarians.</p><br>
<p>Today the bay is a notable source of shrimp and sulfur, as well as of muskrat fur, natural gas, and petroleum.</p><br>
<p>Until Hurricane Betsy made landfall in 1965, Barataria Bay was home to Manila Village.</p><br>
<h2>2010 oil spill</h2><br>
<p>On 27 July 2010, the tugboat Pere Ana C. struck an abandoned wellhead owned by Houston-based Cedyco Corp, while pulling a barge near Bayou St. Denis in Barataria Bay, causing a 20 to 100 ft oil and gas geyser.</p><br>
<p>The geyser was brought under control and the wellhead was repaired and capped on 1 August 2010, five days after the collision.</p><br>
<p>Panther Mountain is one of the Catskill High Peaks, located in the Town of Shandaken in Ulster County, New York. At approximately 3,720 ft in elevation, it is the 18th highest in the range. A combination of factors has led geologists to believe the mountain is on the site of an ancient meteorite impact crater.</p><br>
<p>Its proximity to Slide Mountain, the highest Catskill peak, the relatively short distance required to climb the mountain from the south and the excellent views available from the mountain and nearby Giant Ledge have made Panther one of the most popular hikes in the range. Aspiring members of the Catskill Mountain 3500 Club must climb it twice, at least once during winter.</p><br>
<h2>Name</h2><br>
<p>The origin of the name is unknown. Panthers may once have been seen in the area; but are not resident in the Catskills today.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>The mountain takes the shape of a longitudinal ridge in the center of the rough circle mostly formed by Esopus and Woodland creeks. Slides north ridge begins right where the Panther/Giant Ledge ridge ends. Two named tributaries of Woodland, its Dougherty Branch and Panther Kill, rise on the mountains western slopes.</p><br>
<p>Three of the valleys around the edge of the mountain have earned separate names of their own. Going clockwise from the southwest, they are Little Peck Hollow, Hatchery Hollow and Fox Hollow. The ridge aside the Daugherty Branch is called Fork Ridge.</p><br>
<p>The mountain rises gradually from the north, with many false summits. The drop to the south, to the col with Giant Ledge, is much sharper.</p><br>
<p>The entire area has long been a part of New York&#39;s Forest Preserve. Today it is within the Slide Mountain Wilderness Area, part of the Catskill Park, managed by the state Department of Environmental Conservation.</p><br>
<h2>Natural history</h2><br>
<h3>Geology</h3><br>
<p>The circular pattern made by the two creeks surrounding Panther Mountain suggest that it might have a different origin from other Catskill peaks. Most mountains&#39; drainage basins show a more dendritic (tree-like) pattern rather than the rosette made by Esopus and Woodland creeks around the mountain.</p><br>
<p>In the 1940s, geologist George Chadwick noticed this dome structure, and concluded that it might be the result of gas pushing up from below. The Dome Gas Company drilled a 6,000 feet (1.8 km) well into the structure. This well produced roughly 50,000 cubic feet (150 m³) of natural gas a day, but since that was not profitable, the effort was abandoned.</p><br>
<p>In the early 1970s, another geologist, Yngvar Isachsen of the New York State Geological Survey at the New York State Museum in Albany, wondered if the stream pattern indicated an impact crater buried beneath the surface. Since it wasn&#39;t his primary task at the Geological Survey, Isachsen did most of his research into the crater question in his own time. He found, when looking at the bed of Esopus Creek, that much of the exposed sandstone and shale showed an unusually closely spaced fracture pattern — every foot (30 cm) instead of every meter (3.3 ft), as is seen elsewhere in the Catskills. He reasoned that if a crater wall lay beneath, the debris from the impact and the sedimentary rock already in the area would have settled more compactly and been more prone to sagging and fracturing over time.</p><br>
<p>It wasn&#39;t until his later years, in the early 1990s, that Isachsen was able to devote more time to the crater question. Since the walls of a newly formed impact crater are often unable to support themselves, landslides occur and build up a mound of rock and soil in the center. This results in a lower density of rock and thus slightly reduced gravitational pull, which can be measured. Isachsen took a gravimeter along on two hikes up the mountain and took regular readings. As he had expected, the gravity in the area was slightly lower than other mountains of comparable elevation in the Catskills, adding more weight to the crater theory.</p><br>
<p>To prove his hypothesis, Isachsen needed to drill deep into the rock under the mountain and find direct mineral evidence of a meteorite strike, but this was beyond his resources. Then he discovered that drill cuttings from the earlier gas well were archived at the New York State Geological Survey museum. These cuttings were examined carefully, during which graduate students working for him found microscopic iron spherules — to him irrefutable evidence of an impact crater.</p><br>
<p>However, questions from crater specialists at a conference in Budapest sent him back to look more closely at the cuttings. One attendee pointed out that he hadn&#39;t ruled out the possibility that the spherules had merely been deposited by a passing meteorite or comet. In October 1999, closer examination of tiny quartz crystals in the samples turned up shock lamellae, which could only have resulted from impact. A group of Canadian specialists confirmed the finding.</p><br>
<p>The impact is estimated to have occurred 375 million years ago, during the Devonian period, when much of what is now the Catskills was either river delta or a shallow sea. The crater lies 2,640 feet (800 m) below the surface, is 6 miles (10 km) wide, and lies directly under the mountain. The meteorite that struck is believed to have been roughly one-half mile (1 km) wide, striking with a force equivalent to 11 trillion tons (9.9 trillion tonnes) of TNT.</p><br>
<p>Isachsen believes it is possible that there may be significant hydrocarbon deposits, often associated with ancient buried impact craters, very deep beneath the mountain.</p><br>
<p>In 2004, the European Space Agency&#39;s Mars Express probe found an analogous circular plateau in the Solis Planum region of the Thaumasia Planum area of Mars. While it has not yet eroded as Panther has, both are an example of inverted relief.</p><br>
<h3>Forests</h3><br>
<p>Panther&#39;s forests are for the most part typical of the Catskills, with beech-birch-maple northern hardwood forests on its lower slopes giving way to boreal forests of balsam fir and red spruce above 3,500 ft on the mountain. While the lower slopes were logged in the 19th century, particularly for Eastern hemlock bark and its tannin, the upper mountain remains in first growth. According to Catskill forest historian Michael Kudish, there is a rare virgin spruce grove near the summit. There are also two open areas visible from the summit on a knob known as Beech Flat, one of about 2 acre at 2,740 ft and another of 5 – at 2,848 ft, are totally natural, resulting from the absence of soil in those areas.</p><br>
<h2>Human history</h2><br>
<p>It is not known who first climbed Panther, due to the sketchy records kept by early inhabitants of the area. Farming, Kudish found, went much lower on Panther 1,613 ft (on average) than it did elsewhere in the Catskills, due to the steep slopes at the mountains base. Later logging climbed to a higher elevation, particularly near the hamlets of Big Indian and Phoenicia due to nearby train stations (Garfield Mountains summit does not appear to be in first growth).</p><br>
<p>The proximity of the railroad led to another common Catskill industry of the time, bluestone quarrying. Kudish has found several along the northern edge of the mountain and suspects there may be more.</p><br>
<p>The Fox Hollow-Panther-Giant Ledge Trail across the mountain used by hikers to reach the summit today was cut in 1935, based on a contemporary Conservation Department pamphlet. The Fox Hollow Lean-To was built the next year.</p><br>
<h2>Approaches</h2><br>
<p>Panther is traversed by the blue-blazed Fox Hollow-Panther-Giant Ledge Trail (GP), which runs north-south from Fox Hollow down to a junction with the yellow-blazed Phoenicia-East Branch (P-EB) Trail 0.5 mile (1 km) south of Giant Ledge. The vast majority of attempts on the mountain use this route.</p><br>
<p>The shorter southern approach is much more popular due not only to its brevity but the excellent views available from Giant Ledge. The northern approach, however, is not without some views of its own. Sometimes the entire 7.5-mile (12 km) GP trail, plus the route to the Giant Ledge trailhead or Woodland Valley State Campground, will be hiked as an overnight backpack, with one of the designated campsites along the trail being use, and cars parked at both ends.</p><br>
<h3>Southern route</h3><br>
<p>Hikers typically park at the trailhead lot, 2,100 ft in elevation, where Ulster County Route 47 bends sharply about three-quarters of a mile (1.3 km) north of Winnisook Lake, midway up or down the hill between it and Big Indian Hollow. Here the P-EB leaves the road again and leads southeast uphill 0.7 mile (1.1 km) and 500 vertical feet (150 m) to the GP in the level area between the ledge and Slide&#39;s north ridge. The former route of the P-EB, now closed, leads downhill to the southwest to its former route across the Winnisook Club.</p><br>
<p>Turning north on the GP, the trail remains level, passing an official campsite and some muddy spots until it reaches the base of Giant Ledge 0.6 mile (1 km) later, where a good, reliable spring can be found via a short side trail. A climb of 0.15 mile (240 m) up the steep, rocky south slope of the ledge, sometimes assisted by rock steps, levels out at 3,200 feet (975 m), where the trail stays close to the east side. There are many viewpoints from the cliff tops here that take in the nearby Burroughs Range (Slide, Wittenberg and Cornell) to the south; the valley of Woodland Creek below with a small area of Ashokan Reservoir; and the Devil&#39;s Path to the northeast. There are more campsites, often likely to be taken early on good summer weekends.</p><br>
<p>The trail remains on the ledge for 0.3 mile (500 m), then drops down again more gently on the north slope. Not too long after reaching level ground, the 720 ft climb up Panther proper begins. At first the trail gently switches back up some rocky stretches of the mountain&#39;s south slope, then at 0.75 mi from the ledge, a short side trail leads to an excellent viewpoint over the Burroughs Range at about 3,300 feet (1,000 m). Another 0.2 mile (400 m) further, the trail passes a grassy area that has been home to a less reliable spring in the past. Not too far beyond, in the middle of two steep, rocky chutes, the trail passes the sign marking 3,500 feet (1,067 m) in elevation, above which open fires are forbidden and camping is only permitted in winter, due to the fragile high-montane environment. The trail levels off gently but there is still almost 0.5 mile (1 km) to the small ledge with a view to the northeast that marks the summit.</p><br>
<p>Via this route, it is 3.2 miles (5.1 km) to the summit. Total vertical gain is 1,920 feet (585 m); net is 1,720 feet (524 m), due to the presence of Giant Ledge along the trail. However, some more experienced hikers sometimes bushwhack around the base of the ledge to save themselves this extra vertical if they do not want to take in the views.</p><br>
<h3>Northern route</h3><br>
<p>The GP trail&#39;s northern end begins at a small parking area at the end of Fox Hollow Road, 1.5 mile (2.5 km) south of NY 28 at 1,420 feet (433 m) in elevation. At 0.4 mile (640 m) from that trailhead, a short side trail leads to the Fox Hollow lean-to and a reliable spring.</p><br>
<p>The trail then begins to climb the long ridge of Panther, finally reaching the first (3,480-foot; 1,061 m) of two false summits after 2.7 miles (4.3 km). A short descent follows, then another climb to the second false summit 0.6 mile (1 km) to the south. Along the way there is an excellent view of the peaks to the west: Balsam, Fir and Big Indian. It is another 1.2 mile (1.9 km) and a steeper climb to the actual summit.</p><br>
<p>Total distance via this route is 4.9 miles (7.9 km). Total vertical ascent is 2,450 feet (747 m).</p><br>
<p>Fort Hill, also known as the John C. Calhoun Mansion and Library, is a National Historic Landmark on the Clemson University campus in Clemson, South Carolina. The house is significant as the home from 1825-50 of John C. Calhoun, a leading national politician of the period, and is now a museum and library maintained in his memory.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>After Calhouns death in 1850, the property passed to his wife to be shared with three of her children: Cornelia, John, and Anna Maria, wife of Thomas Green Clemson. Anna sold her share to Floride Calhoun. Floride Calhoun sold the plantation to her son, Andrew Pickens Calhoun, and held the mortgage. After Andrew died in 1865, she filed for foreclosure against Andrews heirs prior to her death in 1866. After lengthy legal proceedings, the plantation was auctioned at Walhalla in 1872. The executor of her estate won the auction, which was divided among her surviving heirs. Her daughter, Anna Clemson, received the residence with about 814 acre and her great-granddaughter, Floride Isabella Lee, received about 288 acre. Thomas Green and Anna Clemson moved into Fort Hill in 1872. After Anna&#39;s death in 1875, Thomas Green Clemson inherited Fort Hill. In his 1888 will, Clemson bequeathed more than 814 acre of the Fort Hill estate to the State of South Carolina for an agricultural college with a stipulation that the dwelling house "shall never be torn down or altered; but shall be kept in repair with all articles of furniture and vesture... and shall always be open for inspection of visitors." Clemson University has operated Fort Hill as a house museum as stipulated in the will. The house is all that remains of what was once an extensive plantation estate.</p><br>
<p>The home was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1960.</p><br>
<p>Fort Hill was closed for a two-year restoration project and was reopened in spring of 2003. Fort Hill was named a national treasure by the Save America&#39;s Treasures program, and its artifacts are currently undergoing a comprehensive conservation program funded by this federal grant and matching funds.</p><br>
<p>Silver Lake or Srebrno jezero  is an oxbow lake along the right Danube bank in the Braničevo region in eastern Serbia, near the town of Veliko Gradište. It is a popular tourist resort.</p><br>
<h2>Location</h2><br>
<p>The lake is located 110 km east of Belgrade, 35 km northeast of Požarevac and 2 km west of Veliko Gradište.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>The lake itself is in the broad, low valley of the Danube, but the neighboring hills rise up from 282 m on the north (Gorica hill) to 362 m on the south (Lipovača hill), while the entire western part of the valley is enclosed by the elongated hill of Veliko brdo and its highest peak of Anatema (324 m). The mouth of the river Pek into the Danube, known by its inverse flow during the high water levels, is just south of the lake. Historical sites of the medieval city-fortresses of Ram and Golubac also in the vicinity of the lake, so as the springs of "Hajdučka voda" (Hajduk&#39;s water).</p><br>
<p>Silver Lake is an arm of the Danube on its right bank. With the main river bed of the Danube it engulfes the marshy ada (river island) of Ostrovo. On both points which connect the lake to the Danube it was dammed and bridged in 1971 by the Veliko Gradište-Zatonje road which also crosses the island. Other settlements on the lake are Biskuplje and Kisiljevo.</p><br>
<p>Silver Lake has an irregular arch shape, it is 14 km long, up to 300 m wide and covers an area of 4 km&sup2;. It is situated at the altitude of 70 m and deep as much as 13 m. The water is clear due to the lack of pollution and the natural filtration of the water through many sand dunes. The lake is abundant in fish, including white amur, common carp (the largest had 44 kg),</p><br>
<h2>Economy</h2><br>
<p>The lake has been a popular holiday and fishing destination for decades, but recently experienced visitor&#39;s boom, attracting tourists from all over Central Serbia, despite lack of major accommodations. The lake has one hotel (Srebrno jezero), several restaurant-boardinghouses, a weekend-settlement and the largest car camping park in Serbia.</p><br>
<p>As a result of the lake&#39;s growing popularity, it has been since recently advertised as "Serbian sea", since Serbia is landlocked. A major plans for turning Silver Lake from the resort of the middle class into a more elite place were announced in July 2007. In the next seven years it is planned to build three hotels, congressional halls, pools (both opened and covered), golf courses, cycling paths, shopping malls and marina. The tennis courts have been constructed earlier in 2007.</p><br>
<p>In 2017, the Silver Lake had the tourist capacity of 2,000 beds with 500 being in construction with the deadline in 2018. There are over 50 objects as part of the village tourism, seven villas, but still only one hotel. Basketball player Miloš Teodosić opened his TEO4 Basketball Camp on the lake. Vicinity of the lake is the location of many festivities: international chess tournaments, Serbian beach volley championships, "The Days of Carevac" (dedicated to Vlastimir Pavlović Carevac), "Bean Festival", "Fishermen Evenings" (fish soup cooking competition, dating from the 1960s), Silafest (international festival of tourism and environmental film), "The Dusks of Ram" (poetry festival), etc. There were over 50,000 visitors in 2016, including many from the neighboring Romania, who mostly visit by weekends.</p><br>
<p>Great Wass Island  lies in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of the State of Maine, United States. On the mainland is Jonesport in Washington County. The island is 5 mi  long, 1.5 mi  wide and it is the biggest island in the Great Wass Archipelago, which contains over 43 islands extending off the coast from Jonesport. Great Wass Island is connected with a bridge to Beals Island, which is then connected to the mainland. Head Harbor Island and Steels Harbor Island lie close to the east. The 1,450 acre Great Wass Island Preserve is in the island. The interior of Great Wass Island supports coastal Maine&#39;s largest stand of jack pine, other typical plants are bakeapple , deer-hair sedge , and dragon’s mouth orchid . The island is part of the Town of Beals, in Washington County.</p><br>
<p>Cape Greco, also known as Cavo Greco , is a headland in the southeastern part of the island of Cyprus. It is at the southern end of Famagusta Bay and forms part of Ayia Napa Municipality.</p><br>
<p>It lies between the towns of Ayia Napa and Protaras, both of which are tourist resorts. It is visited by tourists for its natural environment, and is a protected nature park.</p><br>
<p>According to local legend, it is also the home of the &#39;Ayia Napa sea monster&#39;.</p><br>
<p>Cape Greco is a National Forest Park is under the administration of the Forestry Department of the Cyprus Ministry of the Interior.</p><br>

<p>At Cape Greco, there is a large mediumwave broadcasting station used by TWR. It has several mast radiators and broadcasts on 1233 kHz with 600 kW.</p><br>

<p>Cerro El Plomo is a mountain in the Andes near Santiago, Chile. With an elevation of 5,434 m , it is the largest peak visible from Santiago on clear days. The adequate season to climb this mountain is between November and March. In spring , soil conditions have abundant snow on the approach. The best time is in January and March, where the approach is snow free, except for some specific areas, and the climate is more stable. The Incas climbed to its summit periodically in the 15th century. The first European ascent of the mountain was by Gustav Brandt and Rudolph Lucke in 1896.</p><br>
<p>During a flight from Santiago, Chile, to Mendoza, Argentina, on 16 July 1932, the Pan American-Grace Airways (Panagra) Ford Trimotor San José crashed on Cerro El Plomo during a severe snowstorm, killing all nine people on board. Buried in ice and snow, its wreckage remained undiscovered until March 1934.</p><br>
<h2>Mummy</h2><br>
<p>The mountain was used as a ceremonial site by the Incas. The mountain achieved its fame in 1954 when a mummy of an approximately nine-year-old child was found on the summit. The mummy resides in the Museo Nacional de Historia Natural in Santiago, Chile.</p><br>
<p>The Brazos Mountains is a range in far northern Rio Arriba County, in northern New Mexico in the southwestern United States. A high crest runs from the border with Colorado for over 20 mi in a south-southeasterly direction. The high point of the range at 11,405 ft is on Grouse Mesa,</p><br>
<p>at the Brazos Benchmark.</p><br>
<p>Two miles (3 km) to the southeast is the more distinctive Brazos Peak, at 11,288 feet (3440 m).</p><br>
<p>The range is mostly located in the privately held Tierra Amarilla Land Grant (the Carson National Forest is to the east and south). It is a distinctive part of the view from the west, including from Heron Lake. U.S. Route 64 crosses the southern end of the range at a 10,481 foot (3194 m) pass. Nearby are the photogenic Brazos Cliffs, headwaters of the Rio Brazos and part of the Rio Chama river system. These mountains overlook the Chama River, the largest tributary of the Rio Grande which lies to the east. In essence, these mountains are the southern extension of the South San Juan Range that lies in Colorado.</p><br>
<h2>Geology</h2><br>
<p>The Brazos Mountains are the southwestern remnants of a Laramide peneplain resulting from the erosion of mountains formed 80 to 55 million years ago during the Laramide orogeny. To the east and northeast lie the Sangre de Cristo Mountains which share a similar geological history. The Brazos Cliffs, which form a dramatic backdrop to Tierra Amarilla, are formed of Precambrium rock.</p><br>
<p>Cerro Noroeste is a mountain located in Southern California&#39;s Kern County, a mile north of the Ventura County border. It is located a few miles southwest of the community of Pine Mountain Club, at an elevation of 8283 feet . The mountain is located in the Los Padres National Forest. It is surrounded by the Chumash Wilderness to the south and west, though the peak itself is not actually within the wilderness .</p><br>
<p>The name Cerro Noroeste means northwest mountain. It was formerly known as Mount Abel in honor of former Kern County supervisor Stanley Abel.</p><br>
<p>The summit can be reached by taking Cerro Noroeste Road, Forest Route 9N27. The road is closed every winter after the first or second snow. It usually is reopened in May though there can still be substantial snow from heavy winters.</p><br>
<p>Located near the summit are Campo Alto campground</p><br>
<p>and a radio tower.</p><br>
<p>Ridgelys Delight is a historic residential neighborhood in Baltimore, Maryland, United States. Its borders are formed by Russell and Greene Streets to the east, West Pratt Street to the north, and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard from the western to southern tips. It is adjacent to the University of Maryland, Baltimore, Oriole Park at Camden Yards, and M&T Bank Stadium. It is situated a short walk from MARC Train and the Light Rails Camden Station, which has made it a popular residence of Washington, D.C. and suburban Baltimore commuters. It is within a 5-minute walk of both Oriole Park at Camden Yards and M&T Bank Stadium and a 10-minute walk from Baltimore&#39;s historic Inner Harbor.</p><br>
<p>In 1792, James McHenry purchased a 95 acre tract from Ridgely&#39;s Delight and named it Fayetteville in honor of his friend Lafayette.</p><br>
<p>With its name derived from Charles Ridgely IIs plantation Ridgelys Whim, Ridgely&#39;s Delight was originally inhabited by craftspeople but later became home to affluent professionals who used their resources to make the rowhouses more ornate.</p><br>
<p>Ridgelys Delight is the birthplace of Babe Ruth and home to the Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum on Emory Street. Several bars and shops are located in the neighborhood, most popularly Quigleys Half-Irish Pub, Camden Pub, Corner Bistro & Wine Bar, and Peace and a Cup of Joe.</p><br>
<p>Big Walnut Creek starts near Mount Gilead, Ohio in Morrow County. It flows south to eastern Delaware County and parallels Alum Creek. It passes to the east of Sunbury and into Hoover Reservoir. The reservoir crosses into Franklin County and flows through Gahanna and Whitehall. Near Obetz it is joined by its principal tributaries Alum Creek and Blacklick Creek at the Three Creeks Columbus Metro Park. It flows through southern Franklin County and joins the Scioto River near the Franklin-Pickaway Counties line at {{coord|39.799305|-83.009373|format=dms|region:US-OH_type:river}}.</p><br>

<p>Lough Lene  is a lake situated in north County Westmeath, Ireland, between the villages of Castlepollard, Collinstown and Fore.</p><br>
<p>It possesses a rich and varied history. It also boasts the existence of prehistoric burial sites, old ruins, many ancient village-type communal circular dwellings locally called ringforts, stiles, and mass paths. Lough Lene also has claims to being the home to kings and Vikings, such as Turgesius who had one of his forts upon the hill on the southwest overlooking the lake from the Ranaghan side, before being killed by Máel Sechnaill mac Maíl Ruanaid.</p><br>
<h2>Legend & history</h2><br>
<p>The name of the lake has appeared in a variety of ways including Lane, Léin and Leibhinn. Sir Henry Piers believed the lake&#39;s name translated as Lake of Learning, tying in with his translation of Fore as the Town of Books. However, other sources seem more inclined to the tradition that the lake was named after the daughter of the fabled Manannán mac Lir (see Children of Lir).</p><br>
<p>The lake is described in Lewis&#39;s Topographical as being an irregular oval shape, possibly 3.2 km long by 1.7 km broad. A freshwater lake, most sources focus on the clarity of the water, with the term "gin clear" being used frequently to describe it. It sits approximately 97 metres (312 ft) above sea level and covers approximately 500 hectares. It plays a vital part in local life from being the water supply for Collinstown to playing an essential part in the social, historical and recreational life of the area.</p><br>
<p>Nun&#39;s Island on Lough Lene was once the site of a convent. Baile na gCailleach, the old Irish name for the town of Collinstown, when translated means "the town of the veiled women, or "the town of the old hags". This was an irreverent name which referred to the nuns of the convent on the island.</p><br>
<p>The two other islands are Castle Island, and Turgesius Island.</p><br>
<p>An ancient bell was found on Castle Island in 1881 and is now in the National Museum of Ireland. A half size reproduction of the ancient bell was presented to Dáil Éireann in 1931 by the widow of a former member of the House, Bryan Cooper, and it has since been the bell of the Ceann Comhairle (Chairperson) of Dáil Éireann.</p><br>
<p>A survey revealed that Nun&#39;s Island was a complex stone structure with causeway-like features, while Castle Island showed the best potential, with a large assemblage of worked timbers. Two logboats were also recovered in 1968, one with dovetail joints. This work continues today. These Roman-period log-boats were constructed for lake fishing, and were about 8 m long, 1.5 m wide, and 80 centimetres deep, were made of oak, yew, and possibly willow. The boats were paddle propelled. Other notable constructional features are that they were complex boats: carved; dugout (extended); mortice-and-tenon; and sewn.</p><br>
<h2>Recent times</h2><br>
<p>In more recent times, since the Republic of Ireland joined the European Union, Lough Lene is also known as the first freshwater lake to obtain a Blue Flag for its pollution-free water. This has been allocated with remarkable regularity to Lough Lene due to the surrounding agricultural communities commitment to preserving this water resource and habitat for fish and wildlife by careful management of effluent from their farms. Lough Lenes clear water also acts as a reservoir for many surrounding villages. Collinstown, Rickardstown and Glenidan have come together to form a successful GAA club called the Lough Lene Gaels.</p><br>
<h2>Water sport activities</h2><br>
<p>Swimming, sailing and windsurfing are popular. Dressing-rooms and picnic areas are available to tourists at the point locally referred to as "the Cut" about 2 km north from the Collinstown cross-roads. "The Cut" is situated on the east end of the lake.</p><br>
<p>Due to the excellent quality and remarkable clarity of the water together with the safe access at "the Cut" the lough is a very popular bathing and swimming location suitable for families and experienced swimmers/Triathletes alike. Local Triathalon clubs and Meath Masters Swimming Club train and hold events here regularly. In Summertime average water temperatures are around 17c, sometimes a few degrees higher during periods of good weather. One of the more popular training swims is out to Turgesius Island a distance of exactly one mile from the slipway at the cut. Whilst a "safe" lake in the sense that access and egress are easy, during periods of moderate or stronger, due westerly winds swimming can become very challenging as waves can quickly form and swimmers are advised to stay close to shore.</p><br>
<p>Jet-skis and water-skiing are prohibited on Lough Lene.</p><br>
<h2>Special areas of conservation</h2><br>
<p>The European Union&#39;s Habitats Directive (92/43EEC) requires member states of the EU to protect wildlife areas. The European Communities (Natural Habitats) Regulations 1977, as amended, implements the directive in the Republic.</p><br>
<p>Lough Lene is a deep lake, which is 20 m deep in some parts. It is a clear hard water lake with marl deposition particularly noticeable along long stretches of its shores.</p><br>
<p>The lake supports a range of pondweeds that include Potamogeton perfoliatus and P. lucens, Canadian pondweed (Elodea canadensis), and a variety of stoneworts (Chara spp., such as C. pedunculata and C. curta) which are marl or hard-water lake indicators.</p><br>
<p>A stony shore line fringes much of the lake, where there are species such as spike-rush (Eleocharis sp.) jointed rush (Polygonum persicaria), marsh pennywort (Hydrocotyle vulgaris), and sedges (Carex spp.). A narrow fringe of emigerent plant species dominated by common reed (Phragmites australis) and common club-rush (Schoenoplectus lacustris) occurs along some stretches of the lakeshore.</p><br>
<p>Patches of wet woodland colonise former areas of cut-away and other low-lying areas close to the lake and are dominated by willows (Salix spp.), birch (Betula sp.) and alder (Alnus glutinosa) with patches of common reed also occurring. These areas support a rich flora. The ground flora of the wood at the northwestern end of the lake includes a range of peat mosses (Sphagnum spp.), bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) and heather (Calluna vulgaris). Alder carr occurs on the juttland into the lake at its northwestern side.</p><br>
<p>Freshwater marsh/fen vegetation, with such species as purple moor-grass (Molinia caerulea), bottle sedge (Carex rostrata), black bog-rush (Schoenus nigricans), and marsh cinquefoil (Potentilla palustris), occurs in certain areas near the lake; one such area supports a population of rare round-leaved wintergreen (Pyrola rotundifolia subsp. rotundifolia).</p><br>
<h2>Bird life</h2><br>
<p>There are many bird species on Lough Lene, in particular, mute swan, teal, pochard, great crested grebe, little grebe, tufted duck, grey heron, water rail, mallard, goldeneye, cormorant and wigeon. The surrounding lands are inhabited by snipe, lapwing and curlew. Of particular significance is the pochard population which, in the winters of 1995/1996 and 1996/1997, there were numbers of national importance averaging 515 individual birds of this population.</p><br>
<p>Much of the lake shore is accessible to grazing cattle, goats, sheep and horses. Unpolluted hard-water lakes such as Lough Lene are becoming increasingly rare in Ireland and in Europe and are of a type that is listed upon the Annex of the E.U. Habitat Directive.</p><br>
<h2>Crayfish</h2><br>
<p>Lough Lene had a notable population of fresh water crayfish, a species that is listed on Annex II of the E.U. Habitats Directive. This species disappeared from Lough Lene in 1987 following an outbreak of crayfish fungus plague. The species was re-introduced and breeding was recorded in 1995. Since then, a further outbreak of the crayfish fungus plague has once again led to the disappearance of the species from Lough Lene.</p><br>
<p>The Barker Inlet is a tidal inlet of the Gulf St Vincent in Adelaide, South Australia, named after Captain Collet Barker who first sighted it in 1831. It contains one of the southernmost mangrove forests in the world, a dolphin sanctuary, seagrass meadows and is an important fish and shellfish breeding ground. The inlet separates Torrens Island and Garden Island from the mainland to the East and is characterized by a network of tidal creeks, artificially deepened channels, and wide mudflats. The extensive belt of mangroves are bordered by samphire saltmarsh flats and low-lying sand dunes, there are two boardwalks , and ships graveyards in Broad Creek, Angas Inlet and the North Arm.</p><br>
<p>The inlet has been adversely impacted since the settlement of South Australia with stormwater and raw sewage discharge, fishing, landfill rubbish dumping, power generation and other activities adversely affecting its flora and fauna. Much of this has changed with the landfill dump on adjacent Garden Island closed in 2000 and remediation work begun. Some stormwater is now being filtered through wetlands before discharge and the inlet has been declared a reserve for the preservation of dolphins, fish, crabs and aquatic plants. The mangroves and waterways are still affected by the adjacent salt crystallization pans, hot wastewater discharge from Torrens Island power station, heavy metal contamination from stormwater and treated sewage, and disturbances from boat traffic.</p><br>
<h2>Physical structure</h2><br>
<p>Barker Inlet is a shallow tidal inlet which, with the adjacent Port River Estuary, formed during the Holocene by the progressive extension of the Lefevre Peninsula by northward littoral drift of sand carried by wave action along the eastern shore of Gulf St Vincent.</p><br>
<p>It has a narrow central channel used for boating. Spring tides are over 2½ metres and at low tide much of the inlet is mudflats that are above water level. Most of the creeks through the mangroves drain surrounding land and are not navigable except at high tide by very small boats. There is an artificial channel, running along the side of a breakwater, from a boat ramp at St Kilda near the inlet&#39;s north end. The coast side of the mangroves are bounded by extensive salt evaporation ponds leased for industrial usage by the South Australian Government.</p><br>
<p>Most of the creeks on the eastern side are tidal although Swan Alley creek is the outlet for the Dry Creek and the Little Para River, and the North Arm Creek for the Barker Inlet Wetlands. The wetlands were created in 1994 as part of a stormwater treatment system with both tidal and freshwater sections. There is 1.72 km of constructed wetlands holding 1.2 Gigalitres of stormwater before discharging via the creek.</p><br>
<h2>Flora and fauna</h2><br>
<h3>Flora</h3><br>
<p>The grey mangroves are uniformly of the type Avicennia marina var. resinifera and cover most of the pre-settlement area, but the surrounding samphire salt flats have been greatly reduced in size by changes in the landform with Tecticornia flabelliformis now listed as threatened in the area. The inlet&#39;s deeper sections are dominated by strap or tape weed (Posidonia spp.). Eelgrass (Zostera muelleri) and garweed (Heterozostera tasmanica) dominate the shallows, often being exposed on mudflats at low tide.</p><br>
<h3>Fauna</h3><br>
<p>Over 70 species of fish have been recorded, along with over 110 of crustaceans and almost 50 of molluscs including species such as western king prawns, King George and yellowfin whiting and blue swimmer crabs.</p><br>
<p>Many bird species use the inlet including cormorants, terns, ducks, swans, pelicans, egrets and herons, as well as silver gulls and white-bellied sea eagles. Including migratory birds, over 250 species have been recorded in the inlet, surrounding wetlands and lagoons.</p><br>
<h2>Former uses</h2><br>
<p>From 1906 until 1972, the inlet&#39;s Broad Creek was used as a landing point for explosives that were then transported by a 2.4 km tramway to the Dry Creek explosives depot. There are abandoned ships in Broad Creek, Angas Inlet and the North Arm of the Port River. The remains of over 30 iron and wooden ships abandoned up until 1945 are now bird roosts and a canoeing attraction.</p><br>
<h2>Protected areas and other designations</h2><br>
<h3>Reserves declared by the South Australian government</h3><br>
<p>The Barker Inlet is associated with the following protected areas - the Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary, the Barker Inlet-St Kilda Aquatic Reserve, the southern part of the St Kilda – Chapman Creek Aquatic Reserve and the Torrens Island Conservation Park.</p><br>
<h3>Non-statutory arrangements</h3><br>
<p>The Baker Inlet is located both within a nationally recognised wetland system known as Barker Inlet & St Kilda and at the southern extent of an Important Bird Area (IBA) known as the Gulf St Vincent Important Bird Area.</p><br>
<p>The Coco Islands  are a small group of islands in the northeastern Indian Ocean. They are part of the Yangon Region of Myanmar.</p><br>
<p>The islands are located 414 km south of the city of Yangon.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The islands took their current name from Portuguese sailors in the 16th century, "coco" being the Portuguese word for the coconut. The Andaman Islands were taken over by the English East India Company in the 18th century. In the 19th century, the British government in India established a penal colony in the Andamans, and the Coco Islands were a source of food for it (mainly coconuts). The British government had leased out the islands to Burma&#39;s Jadwet family, a respected business family in Rangoon that also had presences in Moulmein and Mergui.</p><br>
<p>Due to the remoteness of the Coco Islands, they were not properly governed, and the British transferred their control to the government of Lower Burma in Rangoon. In 1882 they officially became part of British Burma. When Burma separated from India in 1937 and became a self-governing Crown Colony, the islands remained a Burmese territory. In 1942, along with the rest of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, they were occupied by Japan. When Burma gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1948, the Coco Islands passed to the new Union of Burma.</p><br>
<p>In 1959, General Ne Win’s interim military administration established a penal colony on Great Coco Island. After Ne Win’s 1962 coup d&#39;état and subsequent installation of a military government, the prison gained the reputation of being a Burmese "Devil’s Island". In 1969, it was enlarged to house an increased number of political prisoners. After a strike, all prisoners on the island were transferred to Rangoon’s Insein Prison in 1971. After the closing of the penal colony, the facilities on Great Coco Island were transferred to the Burmese Navy.</p><br>
<p>Burmese writer Mya Than Tint was among the people incarcerated at the Great Coco Island penal colony.</p><br>
<p>The Coco Islands were allegedly leased to the Peoples Republic of China from 1994. The governments of Burma and the Peoples Republic of China deny this, and many members of the Burmese military categorically deny any agreement at all.</p><br>
<h2>Military</h2><br>
<p>China supposedly established a SIGINT intelligence gathering station on Great Coco Island in 1992 to monitor Indian naval activity in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The station is also said to allow China to monitor the movement of other navies and ships throughout the eastern Indian Ocean, especially in the crucial point for shipping routes between the Bay of Bengal and the Strait of Malacca. It may also be used to monitor activities at the launch site of the Indian Space Research Organisation at Sriharikota and the Defence Research and Development Organisation at Chandipur-on-sea. The Chinese Army has future plans of building a maritime base on Little Coco Island.</p><br>
<p>The alleged existence of the Chinese base has been questioned. In 1998, the United States stated that it had not detected any significant Chinese activity in Burma. In October 2005, India’s Chief of Naval Staff was quoted as saying that India had "firm information that there is no listening post, radar or surveillance station belonging to the Chinese on Coco Islands". In 2014, Air Marshal P. K. Roy, commander-in-chief of India&#39;s Andaman and Nicobar Command, stated that "China has been developing a runway for civilian purposes. There are no reports of the presence of Chinese per se. The situation is not alarming". He added that there was only some civilian infrastructural developments, which were not a threat to India.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>The Bay of Bengal lies to the west of the islands, and the Andaman Sea lies to the east. The Burmese mainland is 250 km to the north. The island of Preparis lies 77 km to the north-northeast of the Coco Islands.</p><br>
<p>The Coco Islands consist of three main islands, namely Great Coco Island and the smaller Little Coco Island, separated by the Alexandra Channel, as well as Table Island, a third small island located near Great Coco Island. Geographically, they are a part of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands archipelago (most of which belongs to India) and are separated from Landfall Island, the northernmost island in the Indian part of the archipelago, by the 20 km wide Coco Channel.</p><br>
<h3>Great Coco Island</h3><br>
<p>The Coco Islands consist of three main islands: Great Coco Island and the smaller Little Coco Island are separated by the Alexandra Channel, as well as a third small island located near Great Coco Island is Table Island.</p><br>
<p>Great Coco Island (14&deg;07&prime;00&Prime;N latitude, 93&deg;22&prime;03&Prime;E longitude) is 10.4 km long and 2 km wide.</p><br>
<p>Many green turtles nest on the beaches of the Island. A series of research programs on marine turtle conservation have been conducted by Myanmar&#39;s Ministry of Livestock, Fisheries and Rural Development. Data collection on tissue samples of green turtles for population genetic and tagging studies was conducted at Great Coco Island in March and April, 2006. Previously, Great Coco Island had never been surveyed for marine turtle conservation due to its remote location. The survey found an estimated 150 sea turtles nesting along with 95,000 hatchlings and juveniles.</p><br>
<h3>Jerry Island</h3><br>
<p>Jerry Island is a 1.1 km long and 0.2 km wide islet located off the southern point of Great Coco Island.</p><br>
<h3>Little Coco Island</h3><br>
<p>Little Coco Island lies 16 km to the southwest of Great Coco Island. It is 5 km long and 1.2 km wide.</p><br>
<h3>Table Island</h3><br>
<p>Table Island is located 2.5 km to the north of Great Coco Island. The island is 1.6 km long and 1.2 km wide.</p><br>
<p>The island previously housed a lighthouse in its southwestern portion, but it is now uninhabited. The lighthouse was built is 1867, with a focal plane of 59 m. It has a lantern and gallery, painted with red and white horizontal bands. Two 1-story brick keeper&#39;s houses and other light station buildings lie around the lighthouse.</p><br>
<p>The island is accessible by boat. One of the former island keepers was brutally murdered by his boss.</p><br>
<h3>Slipper Island</h3><br>
<p>Slipper Island is a 0.4 km long islet located off the northwestern point of Table Island, separated from it by a 0.2 km wide sound.</p><br>

<h2>Demography</h2><br>
<p>There are more than 200 houses on Great Coco Island, and its total population is around a thousand people. A large water catchment reservoir is able to support the island&#39;s population.</p><br>
<p>There is a naval base on the islands, which belongs to the 28th unit of the Myanmar Navy. It is home to some 200 soldiers and their families.</p><br>
<h2>Climate</h2><br>
<p>The Coco Islands have a tropical monsoon climate (Köppen climate classification Am). Temperatures are very warm throughout the year. There is a winter dry season from December to March and a summer wet season from April to November. The heaviest rain falls in September, with an average of 761 mm of rain.</p><br>
<h2>Administration</h2><br>
<p>The island belongs to the township of Cocokyun. The township had a corruption scandal in the Myanmar general election of 2015. Ballots were filled in Yangon without being shipped, resulting in a high turnout and subsequent police investigation.</p><br>
<h2>Transportation</h2><br>
<p>The 1,800 m Coco Island Airport (ICAO code: VYCI) is located on Great Coco Island. It follows the north-south axis near the island&#39;s village.</p><br>
<p>The airport was recently renovated. There are sources claiming that the airport is being used as a Chinese air-force base.</p><br>
<h2>Flora and fauna</h2><br>
<p>The islands offer the opportunity to see rare reptiles, birds, and mammals that are unique to the Coco Islands.</p><br>

<p>Playgreen Lake is a lake in the province of Manitoba in Canada. The lake covers an area of 657 km&sup2; and it is a part of the Nelson River watershed. The lake is the ninth largest lake in the province. It is located along the Nelson River some 10 km north from the north end of Lake Winnipeg. It was first mapped by noted British surveyor, map-maker, chief fur trader and explorer Peter Fidler in 1809.</p><br>
<h2>Hydrography</h2><br>
<p>The Nelson River flows into Playgreen Lake from Lake Winnipeg then flows from two channels into Cross Lake.</p><br>
<p>The east channel and the Jack River flow from the southeast portion of the lake into Little Playgreen Lake then the Nelson east channel continues in a northerly direction passing through Pipestone Lake on its way to Cross Lake. The Echimamish River on this section leads to the Hayes River and York Factory on the Hudson Bay part of early Canadian canoe routes important during the North American fur trade.</p><br>
<p>The west channel flows out of the north ends of Playgreen Lake, Kiskittogisu Lake and Kiskitto Lake into Cross Lake at the Manitoba Hydro&#39;s Jenpeg Generating Station and Dam.</p><br>
<p>Wägitalersee is an artificial lake in Wägital, a valley in the canton of Schwyz, Switzerland. The lake is surrounded by the mountains Gross Aubrig, Fluebrig, Zindlenspitz, Brünnelistock and Bockmattli. The reservoir is located in the municipality of Innerthal.</p><br>
<p>The old village of Innerthal was flooded in 1924 when the dam Schräh was constructed. A new village was built on the current lake.</p><br>
<h2>Economy</h2><br>
<p>The primary economical purpose of the Wägitalersee is to serve as reservoir for pumped-storage hydroelectricity. The power plant and the reservoir dam became operational in 1924, thereby creating the Wägitalersee. The power plant is operated by NOK Wägital / AG Kraftwerk Wägital and produces approximately 120 million kWh of energy per year.</p><br>
<p>Besides the above industrial purpose, the lake is very popular as a (nearby) recreational area for families, hikers, nature lovers and especially fishermen. The waterside is easily accessible on foot and also by car (in certain areas).</p><br>
<p>Ranco Lake  is located in Ranco Province of Chile. It is the largest lake of Los Ríos Region and the fourth largest in Chile. Administratively Ranco Lake is split into three communes; La Unión, Futrono and Lago Ranco. The lake hosts a series of islands, of which Huapi Island is the largest. The western half of the lake is roughly circular while the eastern part features deep embayments. Geographically the lake lies in the Andean precordillera, the zone between the Chilean Central Valley and the Andes.</p><br>
<p>During the Miocene the lake depression was connected to the Pacific Ocean as an embayment of it. During this period a series of marine fossil bearing sediments known as Estratos de Lago Ranco were deposited in the lake area. During the quaternary glaciations the lake depression was covered by a large glacier lobe of the Patagonian Ice Sheet which left semicircular moraines around the lake&#39;s western shore.</p><br>
<p>The Great Craggy Mountains, commonly called the Craggies, are a mountain range in western North Carolina, United States. They are a subrange of the Blue Ridge Mountains and encompass an area of approx. 194 sq mi . They are situated in Buncombe County, North Carolina, 14 miles northeast of Asheville. The Black Mountains lie to the northeast, across the upper Cane River valley.</p><br>
<p>The Blue Ridge Parkway runs along the crest for most of the way between Asheville and Mount Mitchell. Craggy Gardens, an area of 16 km, is covered with purple Catawba rhododendrons in mid-June. The parkway through the area was closed from late 2012 through early 2013 due to subsidence caused by heavy rains, and had to be closed again during summer 2013 due to a reoccurrence of the same issues. Access to Mount Mitchell is only from the north or via detour from the south.</p><br>
<h2>Habitat</h2><br>
<p>The high slopes of the Great Craggies are dominated by heath bald with rhododendron and blueberry, and northern hardwood forest with beech, buckeye, mountain ash, and red oak. The Craggies are in the Pisgah National Forest.</p><br>
<h2>Peaks</h2><br>
<p>The highest point in the Great Craggy Mountains is Craggy Dome, which rises to an elevation of 6,105 ft.</p><br>
<p>Puyehue Lake,  is an Andean piedmont lake on the border of Los Lagos Region with Los Ríos Region of Chile.</p><br>
<p>Puyehue is a lake of glacial origin. Several times during the Pleistocene glaciations, the lake depression was occupied by a large glacial lobe of the Patagonian Ice Sheet, which formed a series of moraines along its western shore. The lake has an east-west elongated shape with Fresia Island in the middle and two minor peninsulas pointing toward the island, one from the north and one from the south. The lake has a remarkably smooth shoreline, with only one inlet of significance: Futacullín Bay on the south. Entre Lagos at the western end is the only town on the lake.</p><br>
<p>As with most other lakes of southern Chile, Puyehue Lake acts as a sediment trap for material from the Andes. Sediment cores taken from Puyehue Lake in 2001 and 2002 have been interpreted as supporting the existence of the Little Ice Age in the Southern Hemisphere. A longer sediment core from the same site was used to reconstruct the evolution of the lake and its drainage basin during the last 18,000 years.</p><br>
<p>The 2011 Puyehue Volcano eruption polluted the Golgol River, a source of the lake, killing fish. Pyroclastic material reached Puyehue Lake through river transport, which resulted in the deposition of a layer of volcanic ash at the bottom of the lake.</p><br>
<p>In the 16th century the lake was known to the Spanish as Llobén, from the Huilliche word of llofën meaning "abundant and continuous rain."</p><br>
<p>Arjuno-Welirang is a stratovolcano in the province of East Java on Java, Indonesia. It is a twin volcano, with the twins being Arjuno and Welirang. There is at least one other stratovolcano in the area, and there are around 10 pyroclastic cones nearby. They are located in a 6 km line between Arjuno and Welirang. The Arjuno-Welirang volcanic complex itself lies in the older two volcanoes, Mount Ringgit to the east and Mount Linting to the south. The summit lacks vegetation. Fumarolic areas with sulfur deposits are found in several locations on Welirang.</p><br>
<p>The name Arjuno is Javanese rendition of Arjuna, a hero in Mahabharata epic, while Welirang is Javanese word for sulfur.</p><br>
<p>A 1950 eruption had a VEI=2. There was an explosive eruption. Another eruption occurred two years later in 1952. This eruption had a VEI=0.</p><br>
<p>A 300 hectares at slope of Mount Arjuno near the road of Surabaya-Malang is used by Taman Safari II.</p><br>
<p>El Vado Lake is a reservoir located in Rio Arriba County, in northern New Mexico in the southwestern United States. Water is impounded by the earth-filled El Vado Dam, on the Rio Chama, 642 ft long and 175 ft high, completed in 1935. The 3,200 acre lake is 5 mi long and over 1 mi wide, and lies at an elevation of 6,900 ft.</p><br>
<p>The eastern shore of the lake is the El Vado Lake State Park, featuring over 100 camping and picnic sites, and two improved boat ramps. The lake is a destination for salmon and trout fishing, as well as for boating. Unlike nearby Heron Lake, boat speeds are not restricted. A 5.5 mi hiking trail runs to the north, crosses the Rio Chama Gorge via a pedestrian suspension bridge, and then connects to the Heron Lake State Park.</p><br>

<p>Lake Inawashiro is the fourth-largest lake in Japan, located in central Fukushima Prefecture, south of Mount Bandai. It is also known as the Heavenly Mirror Lake. The lake is located within the borders of Bandai-Asahi National Park.</p><br>
<p>In winter swans migrate to the beaches of the lake and stay there until spring.</p><br>
<p>Lake Inawashiro was formed some 30-40,000 years ago when a tectonic depression was dammed by a major eruption and pyroclastic flow from Mount Bandai. The water is acidic with a pH value of approximately 5.0, and has a high degree of transparency. The water level was considerably less during the Jomon period as numerous artifacts and ceramic fragments have been found offshore.</p><br>
<p>The lake water is an important source for irrigation in the Aizu region of western Fukushima Prefecture. An irrigation canal was completed during the Edo period and another in 1882. A third canal completed in 1915 supplies the city of Kōriyama with drinking and industrial water. The water also supplies a number of hydroelectric power plants. The lake is also an important tourist and leisure attraction in Fukushima Prefecture.</p><br>
<p>Mount Siyeh, with a height of 10,014 ft, is the fifth tallest and one of six peaks over 10,000 ft in Glacier National Park, Montana, United States. Mount Siyeh was named after a Blackfeet Indian, Sai-yeh, whose name means "Crazy Dog" or "Mad Wolf."</p><br>
<p>Mount Siyeh stands about two miles east of the Continental Divide, within the watershed of the Saint Mary River, which drains into the Saskatchewan River, and ultimately into Hudson Bay.</p><br>
<p>Mount Siyeh is rather easily accessible from a variety of different routes. It can be ascended via a long scree scramble from the Preston Park area, or from Piegan Pass via Cataract Mountain. The summit can also be reached via a long hiking/mountaineering route dubbed the "Skyline Experience&quot this route starts from the Many Glacier Hotel and involves 5.5 mi ridge walk and includes the summits of Wynn Mountain (8,404 ft) and Cracker Peak (9,833 ft) before reaching the top of Siyeh.</p><br>

<p>Peacock Lane is a four-block street in southeast Portland, Oregon, in the United States. It is known for its fully decorated homes during the Christmas and holiday season.</p><br>
<p>During this time of year, thousands of people come visit to view the decorated houses. The street was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The tradition of decorating the houses along Peacock Lane with festive lights and displays dates back to the 1920s. It&#39;s been an annual event ever since but it was interrupted during World War 2 while the United States was rationing valuable resources that included electricity.</p><br>
<p>Many homeowners often pass along their decorations to new residents when they sell their property. While they&#39;re not under any sort of contractual obligation to decorate, most opt to do so.</p><br>
<p>Popular annual displays include several Peanuts characters ice-skating on a small pond, a plywood Oregon State Beaver and a large wooden Grinch from How the Grinch Stole Christmas! that has been a staple since the 1980s. The Grinch has been vandalized several times over the years. It was stolen for a brief period in 1994 and was decapitated in 1997. The Grinch now has a red bow tied around his neck to help conceal the damages. More recent displays feature characters from Dr. Who, The Muppets, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Star Wars and several Nickelodeon cartoon shows. A life-sized mural of Will Ferrell&#39;s "Buddy" from the 2003 film Elf adorns a small stand that sells hot chocolate and coffee.</p><br>
<p>As the annual tradition has become increasingly popular, residents on the lane have cited their concerns over vandalism, heavy crowds and even public urination. To help combat these problems, the street is now closed to automobiles on certain evenings. The Portland Police department has also stepped up patrols and employs officers to direct traffic during busier hours.</p><br>
<p>In June 2017, the area was nominated for listing on the National Register of Historic Places and earned the designation later that November.</p><br>
<p>summit towards the north-east</p><br>
<p>Ditchling Beacon is the third-highest point on the South Downs in south-east England, behind Butser Hill (270 m; 886 ft) and Crown Tegleaze (253 m; 830 ft). It consists of a large chalk hill with a particularly steep northern face, covered with open grassland and sheep-grazing areas. Situated just south of the East Sussex village of Ditchling and to the north-east of the city of Brighton, it is the highest point in the county of East Sussex. A road runs from Ditchling up and across the northern face and down into the northern suburbs of Brighton, and there are car parks at the summit and the northern base. Various charity, sporting and other events which are run regularly between London and Brighton incorporate this steep road as a challenging part of their route. It was also featured as a climb on the first of two days&#39; racing in Britain in the 1994 Tour de France. The Tour organisers gave Ditchling Beacon a climb category of 4. 20 years later it was included as part of the route of the seventh stage of the 2014 Tour of Britain from Camberley to Brighton.</p><br>
<h2>Location</h2><br>
<p>The hill dominates adjoining parts of the South Downs ridge, and particularly the much lower ground to the north (where the villages and towns of Mid Sussex are now located) in the Lower Weald. This represented an excellent position for defensive purposes, and is known to be the site of an early Iron Age hill fort. A single defensive bank and ditch enclosed an area of approximately 5.5 hectares (13.6 acres). Relatively little excavation of the fort has been carried out, however, and the existence of dew ponds, paths and tracks, as well as regular ploughing activity over the years, reduces the likelihood of any significant discoveries in the future.</p><br>
<h2>Access</h2><br>
<p>The only road access to the summit is via the steep and narrow Beacon Road, which runs from the centre of Ditchling village and takes the name Ditchling Road once the summit is reached and the descent into Brighton commences. Beacon Road connects with the B2116, which connects several villages close to the foot of the South Downs with the outskirts of Lewes, the county town of East Sussex. Underhill Lane, a minor road directly at the foot of the Downs, crosses Beacon Road adjacent to the car park. The road then commences a steep ascent of the northern slope, from 90 to 248 metres above sea level in just over 1.6 kilometres (one mile) sweeping from side to side around a number of sharp bends.</p><br>
<p>At the summit is a large car park, owned and operated by the National Trust (which also owns and manages approximately 1.6 hectares (4 acres) of land on the hill). Controversy occurred in November 2005 when a £2.00 charge for parking at this car park (and five others at National Trust-owned sites on the South Downs) was introduced.</p><br>
<p>From this point, Ditchling Road descends through open downland for approximately 4 km until the edge of the Brighton built-up area is reached at Hollingbury. The road crosses the A27 Brighton Bypass and continues as a busy suburban road for more than 5 km into the centre of Brighton.</p><br>
<p>Brighton & Hove, Brighton&#39;s main bus operator, has operated special services from locations in the city centre to Ditchling Beacon, via Ditchling Road, since 2002. Route 79, often operated using open-topped buses, originally ran during the summer only, but its increasing popularity means that as from 2006, some journeys have also been operated during the winter.</p><br>
<p>A footpath and bridleway runs across the ridge from east to west, taking in the summit; this forms part of the South Downs Way. Various footpaths and bridleways run down both the northern and southern slopes towards Brighton, Ditchling and other nearby villages such as Westmeston and Clayton. The road is considered too dangerous to walk along.</p><br>
<p>Access by rail can be achieved from Hassocks, from where a well-used path runs alongside the line to Clayton, at the western end of Underhill Lane. From here, access can be gained to several paths and bridleways leading up to Ditchling Beacon itself, or points slightly to the west on the South Downs Way.</p><br>
<h2>Flora and fauna</h2><br>
<p>A wide variety of plants can be found on Ditchling Beacon, especially during the summer. Flowers and herbs suited to chalk grassland, such as marjoram, thyme and certain types of orchid (notably the common spotted orchid), are often reported. (Some parts of the surrounding land are merely scrubland, however.) Butterflies are common; a notable example is the Chalkhill Blue, which is particularly well suited to uncultivated chalk downland areas. Some parts of the hill and the surrounding fields (particularly Ditchling Down, a large open area near the base of the northern face, close to the Beacon Road car park) are used for the grazing of sheep.</p><br>
<h2>Geodesy</h2><br>
<p>Ditchling Beacon was the origin (meridian) of the 6 inch and 1:2500 Ordnance Survey maps of Sussex.</p><br>
<p>Clovernook Farm was the family home of poets Alice and Phoebe Cary in what is now North College Hill, Ohio. The farm was once part of a 1 million acre  tract of Springfield Township that was purchased in 1787 by John Cleves Symmes, a New Jersey delegate to the Continental Congress and a pioneer in the Northwest Territory. The first member of the Cary family in southwestern Ohio was Revolutionary War veteran Christopher Cary, who emigrated to Ohio in 1803 to claim the land grant he was awarded by the Federal government for his military service. His son Robert worked on the family farm before leaving home to fight in the War of 1812.</p><br>
<p>In 1813-14, Christophers brother William Cary built a log cabin in the “wilderness” 10 mi north of Cincinnati and moved his family to the area, which was then known as Mill Creek Township. Soon after, William purchased an additional 75 acre north of North Bend Road adjacent to his original tract and sold part of this land to his brothers son Robert. who called the 27 acre Clovernook Farm.</p><br>
<p>After returning home from the war, Robert erected a small three-room frame house for his family in 1814; this home was the birthplace of Alice and Phoebe. Robert also laid out the first community in the area, on the east side of Hamilton Avenue (now also known as USA Route 127), and called it Clovernook as well.</p><br>
<p>The white brick house now known as Cary Cottage, which stands on the campus of the Clovernook Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired at 7000 Hamilton Avenue, was built in 1832. It was a more substantial structure with a frame porch. As their family grew, Robert and his wife Elizabeth divided their nine children among the two homes.</p><br>
<p>Late in life, Alice Cary told a friend about her family&#39;s home in Ohio: "In the autumn of 1832, by persevering industry and frugal living, the farm was at last paid for, and a new and more commodius dwelling erected for the reception of the family. This new dwelling, which is still standing, is no more than the plainest of farm-houses, yet it represents a degree of comfort only attained after a long struggle."</p><br>
<p>The house contains original wooden floors, a narrow winding staircase, a kitchen fireplace and bake oven, and a working outdoor well. The bricks used in its construction were fired on the property. Restoration and furnishing of the house—begun after it was added to the National Register of Historic Places—were aided by a number of descriptive passages in Alice and Phoebe&#39;s poems.</p><br>
<p>In 1903, Cary Cottage became the first home for blind women in Ohio through the work of the Trader sisters, Florence and Georgia (who was blind). The Cary house and the land surrounding it were purchased by William A. Procter, grandson of the Procter & Gamble co-founder, in order to give them in trust to the Traders. As many as thirteen blind and visually impaired women (and one man) lived in the house as the Trader sisters used the land and the home to provide them employment as a source of dignity and direction. This mission became the work of the Clovernook Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired, and it now offers instruction, employment, community living and low vision services for men and women. The center runs three manufacturing departments and is one of the country&#39;s largest volume producers of Braille publications.</p><br>
<p>The Cornelius Wynkoop Stone House is located along US 209 in the hamlet of Stone Ridge, New York, United States. It is a stone house in the Georgian style, built from 1767-72 for Cornelius Evert Wynkoop. It is a contributing property to the Main Street Historic District, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in its own right in 1996.</p><br>
<p>The house combines a Georgian plan with a gambrel roof, an unusual combination reflecting British and Dutch tastes found on only one other stone house in the Hudson Valley. George Washington spent a night at the house as well.</p><br>
<h2>Building</h2><br>
<p>The two-story building sits on a 60 by base. All facades are made of locally quarried gray limestone. The since-modified original first floor plan of a center hall dividing a large room on one side from two smaller ones on the other is still evident in the basement layout, with the original winter kitchen in the southwest corner. The second story is given over to bedrooms and storage space. The fine wide stair, with gumwood balusters and rails gives ascent to the attic, used also for storage.</p><br>
<p>A 24 by stone ell at the rear considerably predates the rest of the house, possibly having been built as early as 1715 as a tenant farmers home. It has evidence of a jambless fireplace, probably removed when the old house was converted into the Wynkoops summer kitchen. Porches and the picket fence out front were added in later years.</p><br>
<p>The interior has changed very little. Care has been taken in contemporary restorations to avoid using newer materials — for example, damaged wood has been reconsolidated with invisible modern epoxies rather than replaced with modern wood. Or, materials and methods true to the period were used. Modern conveniences such as heating, plumbing and electricity were not installed until 1992.</p><br>
<p>A nearby carriage house, the other building on the plot, is a contributing property to the site as it was built around the same time. Six large black locust trees, spaced 10 feet (3 m) apart on the front of the property, date to circa 1770 as well and are also considered integral to its setting.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Cornelius Evert Wynkoop was the great-grandson of the original Dutch settler in his family, Cornelis Wynkoop, who established a homestead in nearby Hurley (formerly known as Nieu Dorp), New York, in the 1680s. After marrying Cornelia Mancis in 1766, Wynkoop, the youngest son of a prosperous brewer, purchased 42 acre and probably began construction of his house in the spring of 1767. A commemorative fireback with the inscription "Nov 5 CWK (Cornelius WynKoop)1772" on the first floor suggested to one historian that the house was probably finished in 1772, but that may be unlikely as similar houses built at the same time had been finished in as little as six months, and Wynkoop was not short of cash. The Georgian design was a common one in pattern books but the gambrel roof was distinctly American and very popular at the time. Contemporary tax records suggest that it was one of the largest, if not the largest, house in the Town of Marbletown at the time.</p><br>
<p>Wynkoop served as an officer in the local Minutemen, as well as on the Committee to Detect and Defeat Conspiracies, along with Aaron Burr and Dewitt Clinton. Due to these connections, George Washington slept at his house on the night of November 15, 1782, when he was on his way to Kingston to give a speech and attend services at the Old Dutch Church.</p><br>
<p>After Wynkoops 1795 death, his wife, daughter and son-in-law ran the farm until 1818, when they sold it to the Lounsbery family, headed by the local blacksmith, who had previously lived in what is now Stone Ridges library across the street. Lounsbery&#39;s descendants held on to it through several subdivisions of the land until 1988. The front porch was built ca. 1870. In 1929, they modified the kitchen roof, adding windows and the rear porch. After four years of vacancy, the present owner acquired it in 1992.</p><br>
<p>Photographs of the house and its interiors have appeared in Architectural Digest, Martha Stewart Living and Town and Country, among other publications. It has also been used as a backdrop for photos in the Lands&#39; End and Ralph Lauren catalogs.</p><br>
